Work Schedule: Monday - Friday Rotating 7:00am - 4:00pm
A qualified anesthesia professional involved in the administration of anesthesia and related services as delineated by the clinical and nonclinical responsibilities described herein.
Knowledge & Experience
Skills-
- Demonstrates current competency in the clinical responsibilities for which the candidate is applying.
- Demonstrates ability to give and follow instructions accurately.
- Demonstrates effective interpersonal skills necessary to interact with various levels of health care personnel.
Education-
- Holds current state licensure as a registered nurse in the state of Indiana, and complies with any applicable state statutory or regulatory requirements concerning advanced practice registered nursing.
- Graduate of a nurse anesthesia educational program accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs or its predecessor.
- Is currently certified by the Council On Certification of Nurses Anesthetists or its predecessor.
Authority and Accountability
- Insurable by an appropriate medical malpractice insurer for the limits required by this institution or state.
- Extensive exposure to confidential information or matters.
- Frequent contact with various persons or groups within and outside of the hospital including employees, department managers, physicians, patients, visitors and outside agency personnel.
- Must be able to work with and communicate with different types of people.

- Must be able to prioritize, utilize critical thinking, and adjust to change.
- Must be able to reason and use logical problem-solving skills.
- Performs duties that require some latitude for independent judgment and initiative in handling situations out of the ordinary.

- Participates in call rotation schedule as assigned.
ACCOUNTABILITY
- Reports to the Surgical Services Manager.
- Reports to the designated charge nurse.
QUALITY ASSURANCE-KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Perform pre-anesthetic screenings, including physical evaluations and patient interviews, and document results.
- Select, order, or administer pre-anesthetic medications.
- Select and prescribe post-anesthesia medications or treatments to patients.
- Administer post-anesthesia medications or fluids to support patients' cardiovascular systems.
- Evaluate patients' post-surgical or post-anesthesia responses, taking appropriate corrective actions or requesting consultation if complications occur.
- Discharge patients from post-anesthesia care.
- Perform or evaluate the results of diagnostic test such as radiographs (x-rays) and electrocardiograms (EKGs).
- Manage patients' airway or pulmonary status using techniques such as endotracheal intubation, mechanical ventilation, pharmacological support, respiratory therapy, and extubation.
- Monitor patients' responses, including skin color, pupil dilation, pulse, heart rate, blood pressure, respiration, ventilation, or urine output, using invasive and noninvasive techniques.
- Perform or manage regional anesthetic techniques such as local, spinal, epidural, caudal, nerve blocks, and intravenous blocks.
- Prepare prescribed solutions, and administer local, intravenous, spinal, or other anesthetics following specified methods and procedures.
- Respond to emergency situations by providing airway management, administering emergency fluids or drugs, or using basic or advanced cardiac life support techniques.
- Select, order, or administer anesthetics, adjuvant drugs, accessory drugs, fluids or blood products as necessary.
- Assess patients' medical histories to predict anesthesia response.
- Develop anesthesia care plans.
- Obtain informed consent from patients for anesthesia procedures.
- Select, prepare, or use equipment, monitors, supplies, or drugs for the administration of anesthetics.
- Calibrate and test anesthesia equipment.
- Disassemble and clean anesthesia equipment.
- Insert arterial catheters or perform arterial punctures to obtain arterial blood samples.
- Insert peripheral or central intravenous catheters
- Instruct nurses, students, or other staff on topics such as anesthetic techniques, pain management and emergency responses.
- Read current literature, talk with colleagues, and participate in professional organizations or conferences to keep abreast of developments in nursing.
- Request anesthesia equipment repairs, adjustments, or safety test.
PUBLIC RELATIONS
- Maintains effective channels of communication with other employees and patients.
- Takes appropriate action in problem situations to offset adverse effects.
- Projects a professional and positive attitude regarding the hospital.
OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES
- Attends 70% of medical staff meetings held during the year.
- Attends mandatory in-service and educational offerings.
- Observes hospital dress guidelines and wears ID badge.
- Provides proper notification for absence and tardiness and is punctual for start of scheduled work time.
- Maintains equipment assigned to department and reports malfunctions appropriately.
- Participates in emergency procedures, fire drills, evacuation procedures and internal/external disaster plans and procedures in accordance with departmental responsibilities.
CONTINUOUS QUALITY IMPROVEMENT
- Participates in the Continuous Quality Improvement Program (CQI) to meet stated goals and objectives of the CQI Program by:
- Bringing potential problems to nursing leader's attention.
- Assisting in data collection.
- Suggesting solutions to problems.
- Emphasizing, supporting and committing to CQI practices and processes.
- Taking action to assure CQI within areas of responsibility.
