Position: ML Academic Interventionist

Schedule: 28 hours per week (7 hours/day, 4 days/week) - $150.43/day 25 hours per week (5 hours/day, 5 days/week) - $107.45/day

Position Purpose: Under the supervision of bilingual/ESL teachers to provide supplementary instructional services and academic support to eligible ELs in order to increase their level of literacy, academic language development, and comprehension of different contents

Essential Job Functions:

• Collaborates with EL and general education teachers regularly to support ELs' learning needs, both academic and social/emotional.
• Implements strategies and resources to address the EL's academic and social/emotional needs.
• Plans individual or small group instruction (resources and/or modified materials provided by teachers).
• Works with EL students during designated time (e.g., meeting in small intervention groups) to continue to develop literacy and English language skills to support academic language development (e.g, academic vocabulary, reading comprehension, etc.).
• Works with EL students to better understand current standards being addressed in core classes.
• Works with EL students on different content area skills (e.g., math skills).
• Assists and contributes in classroom preparations and strategies for reinforcing instructional materials and skills according to ELs' proficiency levels and needs.
• Provides in class (push-in) academic and language support.
• Works with EL students individually and in small groups to implement assigned programs.
• Attends grade level team meetings to discuss students' needs, strategies, share ideas, resources, etc.
• Provides insight into instructional modifications for ELs, such as visual supports, specific academic language, background building, etc.
• Compiles and analyzes EL student data to identify students who need specific skill-building help (e.g., bottom 30% list, WIDA Proficiency levels 2, 3, 4, Basic or Below Basic readers, and teacher recommendations)
• Helps reinforce behavior and academic expectations of the team.
• Assists with record-keeping procedures to document student learning and performance.
• Constructs, copies and distributes and uses educational materials, as needed
• Regular, reliable and punctual attendance

Additional Duties: Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.

Equipment: Use standard office equipment, such as personal computers and copiers.

Travel Requirements: Travel between schools, or between schools and central offices, may be required for certain positions.

• Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form.
• Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide, and perform arithmetic operations as needed to assist students.
• Ability to understand, apply and use personal computers and software applications (e.g., Word, Excel).
• Ability to maintain confidentiality of information regarding students, employees and others.
• Ability to establish a supportive and compassionate relationship with EL students.
• Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff and others contacted in the course of work.
• Ability to report work orally or in writing to supervisor as required.
• Effective writing and verbal communication skills.
• Dependable self-starter who can work with a minimum of direction.
• Excellent people or organizational skills.
• Ability to work in an economically, culturally and racially diverse environment.

Qualifications:

• A minimum of 90 college credits from an accredited college or university, required.
• Bachelor's degree preferred.
• Valid Michigan teacher's certificate preferred.
• Experience working with students with diverse learning needs.
• An understanding of working with content standards or willingness to learn.
• Able to demonstrate understanding of curriculum development processes.
• Able to develop and maintain positive relationships with staff, students, and administration.
• Ability to support general education instructional staff.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision and ability to adjust/focus.

Work Environment: The noise level in the work environment is usually loud to moderate.

Mental Functions: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to compare, analyze, communicate both orally and in writing, copy, coordinate, instruct, compute, synthesize, evaluate, use interpersonal skills, compile and negotiate.
