Job Description
This role provides hands-on clinical and administrative support in a busy clinic setting. The medical assistant helps coordinate patient care by performing follow-ups, updating patient records, answering inbound calls, ordering labs, relaying lab results, and supporting triage activities. The position requires strong attention to detail, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work efficiently in an electronic medical record (EMR) environment.
Responsibilities

• Perform patient follow-ups to support continuity of care and ensure patients receive timely information and services.
• Update patient records accurately, including entering patient updates, visit details, and clinical information into the electronic medical record system.
• Answer inbound phone calls in a professional and courteous manner, addressing patient questions, routing calls appropriately, and documenting interactions as needed.
• Order laboratory tests according to provider instructions and ensure orders are entered correctly into the EMR system.
• Relay lab results to patients and providers in a timely and accurate manner, following clinic protocols and documenting all communications.
• Schedule and coordinate follow-up appointments, ensuring patients are booked appropriately and appointment details are clearly communicated.
• Assist with triage by gathering patient information, assessing basic needs within scope, and escalating concerns to clinical staff as appropriate.
• Provide general clinical support to providers, including assisting with patient care tasks within the scope of a medical assistant.
• Support front desk operations as needed, including appointment scheduling, patient check-in, and insurance or administrative coordination.
• Use medical terminology accurately when documenting and communicating patient information.
• Maintain a high level of customer service by treating all patients and colleagues with respect and professionalism.
• Collaborate with clinical and administrative staff to ensure efficient clinic operations and a positive patient experience.

Essential Skills

• At least 1 year of experience in medical assisting or a closely related clinical support role.
• Medical assisting diploma or certification, or 1+ years of medical assistant experience (preferred but not required).
• High school diploma.
• Hands-on experience working in a medical or healthcare environment.
• Proficiency with electronic medical records (EMR), preferably Athena.
• Experience with electronic health records and electronic medical record documentation.
• Knowledge of medical terminology and ability to use it accurately in documentation and communication.
• Experience with appointment scheduling and patient care coordination.
• Ability to order labs and process laboratory requests accurately.
• Experience answering and managing a high volume of inbound calls in a healthcare setting.
• Basic triage support skills within the scope of a medical assistant.
• Strong customer service skills and a patient-focused approach.
• Ability to provide clinical support and medical assisting within defined protocols.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) knowledge or certification (if required by clinic policy).
• Understanding of health insurance processes relevant to front desk and patient intake.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) or similar credential is a plus.
• Previous experience working at a clinic front desk is beneficial.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail when managing patient records and scheduling.
• Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced healthcare environment and adapt to changing priorities.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills for interacting with patients, providers, and team members.
• Proficiency with healthcare-related software and electronic health record systems beyond Athena is an advantage.

Work Environment
The role is based onsite at a clinic and follows a Monday through Friday schedule, typically from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The medical assistant works in a clinical setting that uses electronic medical record systems, including Athena, and other healthcare technologies to manage patient care and documentation. The environment involves frequent interaction with patients, providers, and administrative staff, as well as regular use of phones and computers for scheduling, data entry, and communication. The clinic offers a comprehensive benefits package that includes medical, dental, and vision coverage, a 401(k) plan, and holiday pay for six paid holidays. Upon conversion to a permanent role, employees receive nine paid holidays and 15 days of paid time off (PTO). Performance-based pay raises are available, and outstanding performance may be recognized with PTO tokens, each worth one hour of PTO that can be used at any time, with no set limit on how many tokens can be earned. This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Winter Haven, FL.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $21.00/hr.
