Tribal Police OfficerTribal Police Officers are responsible for patrolling the reservation and tribal trust lands to prevent crime and enforce laws and regulations, responding to all calls for service, and performing specialized technical, administrative, and/or investigative assignments. Police Officers should possess an understanding of tribal sovereignty, laws, and regulations, as well as the need for enforcement. The principal duties of this class are performed in a variety of emergency and non-emergency situations, which may involve exposure to potential personal danger.Essential duties and responsibilities include:Maintaining law and order within the jurisdiction of the Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe.Providing law enforcement services to the tribal community, co-workers, and public in a tactical, ethical, pleasant, and courteous manner.Responding to all calls concerning non-emergencies and emergencies such as traffic accidents, suspicious activity, confrontations, disturbances, altercations, and disorderly conduct.Maintaining law and order within the area of assignment by patrolling the area in a patrol vehicle, investigating suspicious situations, and taking action as appropriate.Where serious crimes or personal injury traffic accidents are involved, determining necessary action, notifying appropriate authorities, safeguarding scenes, preserving evidence, identifying and obtaining information from witnesses, and developing preliminary investigative leads.Performing investigative work such as investigation of domestic/civil disputes, felonies, and misdemeanors, traffic accidents involving property damage or personal injury, or incidents of alleged or suspected burglary or vandalism.Investigating, apprehending, arresting, and/or detaining all persons charged with violation of Federal or Tribal Law & Order Codes.Conducting preliminary investigations at crime scenes, including the gathering of evidence and the locating of witnesses and victims.Assessing crime scenes where children may be in the home and adhering to Mandatory Reporting procedures.Collecting and preserving evidence associated with crimes.Searching persons, places, and things; seizing and impounding property and evidence.Processing, collecting, and labeling evidence or property as required.Interviewing victims, witnesses, suspects, etc.Photographing crime scenes and preparing reports.Making arrests in cases of crimes and transporting person(s) arrested to the appropriate authority for booking or formal charging.Performing such assignments as working radar on busy highways, patrolling, operating night surveillance, coordinating traffic and crowd control activities at celebrations and community functions.Helping to direct traffic at times of funerals, emergencies, or congestion.Conducting traffic stops, issuing citations for violations, and using a breath-analyzer to determine the degree of intoxication of drivers, and operating other technical equipment.Testifying at hearings and trials as an expert witness as required.Preparing written reports and documents incidents or cases for Tribal Prosecutor and/or Tribal Child Protection staff in a timely manner; completing and maintaining reports, logs, and other records as required in a legible manner.Preparing and serving legal documents as required.Maintaining confidentiality of investigations and cases. Protecting the privacy and constitutional rights of all persons.Performing public assistance activities.May conduct search and rescue duties.Administering first aid when necessary, including the use of oxygen, CPR, and other equipment and techniques to those in need when appropriate.Must be able to quickly assess situations in accordance with the operating rules, regulations, and laws, while considering the needs of the tribal community in order to protect the health and safety of the tribal community, public, other officers, and self.May participate in special task forces assigned by supervisory staff, which may include school resource officer duties, such as student, staff, and community education and training, as requested by the tribal community, tribal government, and the Tribal Council.Must be available for emergency law enforcement duties at any time.Serves as training officer as directed, providing indoctrination and instruction to Bureau, Tribal, or other law enforcement personnel.Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with the community, Tribal Courts staff, Executive Committee, representatives of federal, state, local, and other tribal agencies.Works in partnership to build positive relationships with the tribal community and other agencies by solving law enforcement issues to improve the quality of life for the tribal community and its residents.Assists the Tribe with public education programs to enforce law and order.Assists the tribal community with crime prevention measures whenever possible.Attends department and staff meetings.Maintains assigned equipment and vehicles, in a clean and serviceable condition.Attends necessary training for current certifications.Performs other duties as assigned by the Chief of Police.Minimum qualifications and requirements include:High school diploma and/or GED equivalent.At least 21 years of age.Possession of a valid South Dakota driver's license.Pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol screening and P.L. 101-630, and Law Enforcement background check.Ability to handle multiple tasks and/or situations and work odd hours, nights, weekends, and holidays.Effective communication skills both verbally and in writing to interface with a wide range of people and/or other human service and justice departments.Completed Basic Police Officer or Police Officer Training and be certified as a Police Officer (State or Federal).Criminal Justice Degree preferred; direct experience with law enforcement in native communities is strongly preferred. Law Enforcement Certificate preferred.
