The Florida Department of Health (DOH) is responsible for the health and safety of all citizens and visitors to the state. As a public health agency, the Florida Department of Health must monitor the health status of Floridians, diagnose, and investigate health problems, and mobilize local communities to address health-related issues. The Florida Department of Health develops policies and plans that support health goals, enforce laws and regulations that protect the health of all residents and visitors, and link people to needed health care services. The Florida Department of Health also provides specialized assistance to pregnant women, infants, and children with special health care needs, regulates health care practitioners, and provides medical disability determinations.

Your Specific Responsibilities:
This is a professional supervisory position overseeing operations of multiple Community Environmental Health programs within the Environmental Public Health Division, including Public Swimming Pools, Food, Group Care, Limited Use, Mobile Home Park, Tanning, Biomedical Waste, Tattoo, and Sanitary Nuisances. The incumbent will supervise six inspectors in the Community Environmental Programs and the coordinator of the Group Care program. This supervisor works under the direction of the Environmental Manager and works closely with the other two Community Environmental Health supervisors to ensure requirements are being met in all programs.
• Possesses and maintains a high level of technical proficiency in all programs supervised, and continually shares knowledge with new and existing EPH staff.
• Responsible for all supervisory duties including, but not limited to, staffing, performance management, planning, monitoring, coaching, and directing their work, and conducting performance appraisals. Supervises student interns and volunteers as needed.
• Coordinates closely with other EPH supervisors in establishing common goals, methods, and action plans for accomplishing the needs of the department. Supports the entire Environmental Public Health team by being a positive role model, applying all skills learned through supervisory and leadership training.
• Responsible for achievement of programmatic requirements and quotas, and support of the Environmental Health team in achieving the Mission and Vision of our department.
• Ensures regulated facilities are inspected to the best of our ability using all available resources, to meet the requirements of our programs and the needs of the community we serve. Conducts inspections and investigations when necessary.
• Provides exceptional customer service to all requesting assistance and p rovides accurate and timely information to all requests.
• Reviews and evaluates departmental policies and procedures, looking for areas of potential quality improvement in areas such as customer service, employee satisfaction, cost effectiveness, and effectiveness.
• Actively participates in DOH-Hillsborough Councils, Committees, Workgroups, or Teams. Represents the department as needed at meetings with other agencies and the community.
• Emergency Duty- Incumbent may be required to work before, during and/or beyond normal work hours or days in the event of an emergency. Emergency duty required of the incumbent includes working in special needs or Red Cross shelters, or performing other emergency duties including, but not limited to, responses to or threats involving any disaster or threat of disaster, man-made or natural.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Qualifications:
Minimum:
- Bachelors’ Degree in Environmental Health, Public Health, Environmental Science, or a Physical or Biological Science from an accredited college or university with no less than 30 semester hours or 40 quarter hours of major course work in Environmental Health, Environmental Science, or a Physical or Biological Science. (A copy of transcripts is required prior to or at the time of interview).
- Please note: In Florida, anyone working in the primary program areas of Food Protection must become certified as a Certified Environmental Health Professional (CEHP) in those programs respectively, per section 381.0101, Florida Statutes and Chapter 64E-18, Florida Administrative Code.
- Certified to perform food inspections in the State of Florida as a Certified Environmental Health Professional (CEHP) or certified as a Registered Sanitarian or Registered Environmental Health Specialist.
- Must have a valid Florida Driver’s License.
- Minimum two years of experience independently conducting public health inspections (for example, drinking water, swimming pools, mobile home parks, and food hygiene).
Preferred:
- Two years of supervisory experience
- Registered Sanitarian/Registered Environmental Health Specialist by National Environmental Health Association or Florida Environmental Health Association
- Master’s degree
