Job Summary OB/GYN Laborist Role A is an in-house position that provides safe, high-quality evidence-based care to obstetric patients and manages hospital resources clinically. In sites with residents or medical students this includes supervision and education. The primary first-line provider is expected to be immediately available and present for the entirety of their shift. ASSIGNMENT: 24-hour in-house call coverage program. LOCATION: High-volume labor and delivery units (>3,000 deliveries per year). Essential Functions Prevent maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality by ensuring all inpatient obstetric care meets or exceeds current standards. Identify and remediate clinical concerns through collaboration with the obstetric care team, including medical students, nursing staff, residents, fellows, advanced practice providers, and attending physicians. Collaborate with the charge nurse to manage unit resources appropriately, prioritizing pending labor inductions and cesarean deliveries. Provide on-site, restricted obstetric care for patients who have had no prenatal care, limited care, or whose provider is unavailable due to emergencies. Facilitate transfers from outside hospitals by accepting medically appropriate transfers, informing relevant team members of pending arrivals, and managing transfers upon arrival. Lead scheduled safety huddles and post-event debriefing sessions. Offer clinical assistance to attending OB/GYNs, advanced practice providers, and residents, including second opinions for fetal heart rate interpretation, assistance in emergencies such as shoulder dystocia and postpartum hemorrhage, surgical assistance for cesarean deliveries, and management of multifetal deliveries. When residents are present, supervise and support their obstetric patient management, including triage evaluation and antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum care. Qualifications Doctorate graduate of an approved medical college. License to practice medicine (MD or DO) in the State of Michigan, required upon hire. DEA registration (CRT) required upon hire.
