Corrections Officer (Lateral Entry)

Lateral Officer Incentives Hiring bonus of $30,000 paid in three installments: $10,000 at hire, $10,000 after completing the Corrections Training Officer (CTO) program, and $10,000 upon completion of the probationary period. Vacation leave bank – upon completion of the CTO program, new lateral officers receive 100 hours of vacation leave. Sick leave bank – upon completion of the CTO program, new lateral officers receive 100 hours of sick leave. Note: If an employee separates before completing three years of employment, the prorated portion of the hiring incentive must be repaid. Salary and Benefits Monthly salary: $7,193.94 – $7,517.64. Additional compensation opportunities include: Shift differential (5.1%) for 12‑hour shifts. Education incentive pay: 4% for Bachelor’s degree, 2% for Associate degree. Longevity pay, starting after 5 years of service. Bilingual pay: 1% premium. About Our Work and Department The Puyallup Police Department is a mid‑size law enforcement agency dedicated to problem‑oriented policing. It is organized into divisions: Patrol, Investigations, Professional Services, Corrections, and Administration. The Corrections division, which operates the city’s 365‑day Detention Facility, includes one Captain and 16 correction officers. Responsibilities Receive and process prisoners after arrest, including booking, photographing, fingerprinting, and completing required records. Search prisoners, inventory and secure their property. Apply physical force as necessary to restrain intoxicated, suicidal, unruly or abusive prisoners. Direct trustee activities, serve meals, clean jail areas, and maintain a safe environment. Issue jail clothing, bedding and personal items to prisoners. Escort visitors and prisoners to and from court hearings, and enforce jail standards. Coordinate medical services and administer medication under professional instructions. Schedule and supervise recreation opportunities for prisoners. Direct in‑custody court video arraignments and work with court personnel and attorneys. Explain jail procedures and ordinances to prisoners and citizens, and seek compliance. Maintain records, including citations, jail logs, data entry, reports, evidence logs, and transitional documentation. Provide armed transport of prisoners to various destinations. Perform other duties as assigned. Supervision The Corrections Officer reports directly to the Corrections Sergeant. Following initial training, officers work independently with occasional supervision for challenging situations. Supervisory duties may include assigning trustee responsibilities. Knowledge of The rules and regulations governing the care and custody of prisoners. Record keeping and report writing procedures. Ability to Learn and enforce jail and department regulations. Qualify with an approved department firearm. Safely operate a city vehicle in all weather conditions. Safely restrain and transport prisoners without personal injury. Maintain accurate records and details. Complete mandatory, job‑related training. Interact courteously with the public. Communicate effectively in English (spoken, reading, writing). Exhibit required physical strength and agility. Build positive working relationships with colleagues and contacts. Maintain reliable, punctual attendance. Experience and Education Lateral‑entry: two years of corrections experience with a city, county, or state facility, or five years of patrol experience with a city, county, or state law‑enforcement agency. No employment gap exceeding 24 months if not currently a corrections or police officer. Proof of completion of the Washington State Correction Officers Academy, Basic Law Enforcement Academy, or an equivalent program approved by the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission. Note: The Washington State Correction Officers Academy does not recognize the Washington State DOC Academy as equivalent; DOC Academy graduates should apply as entry‑level corrections officers. Special Qualifications U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident, or deferred‑action for childhood arrivals recipient. Fluency in speaking, reading, and writing English. Valid Washington State driver’s license, obtainable and maintainable throughout employment. Physical Demands and Work Environment The role requires the ability to exert force and lift up to 70 pounds, perform tactical self‑defense during escape attempts, restrain prisoners, and frequently move on foot. The job may involve extended periods of standing, sitting, kneeling, crouching, bending, stooping, crawling, and repetitive hand motions associated with computer data entry.
