Registered Nurse (RN)

General Information

The position offers the opportunity to work within a critical access hospital focused on delivering essential healthcare services.

Beds:
- Medical Surgical: 12 beds
- Emergency Department (ED): 5 beds with capacity to increase to 8
Experience Required: Minimum of 1 year (a mix of ED and MedSurg experience)
Travelers: Must reside more than 100 miles away from the facility; first-time travelers may be accepted depending on interview and fit.
Permanent Staff: Must wait 1 full year to return as a traveler.

Patient Types

Medical Surgical, Intermediate level, outpatient infusions, and ED patients (ESI 1-5)
Diagnosis includes: Stroke, Myocardial Infarction (MI), Trauma

Patient Ratios

Medical Surgical: 1:4-6
ED: 1:4 unless critical then 1:1; ESI 1:5

Required Certifications

Basic Life Support (BLS)
Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS)
National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
Trauma Nurse Core Course (TNCC)
Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) certification is preferred

Required Education

Completion of a nursing education program that is approved by a board of nursing, leading to Registered Nurse (RN) licensure in South Dakota.

Key Skills Required

Experience in both Medical Surgical Inpatient Care and ED training with a focus on critical and unstable patients
Trauma care experience
Ability to apply a team nursing approach (Nurse, Respiratory Therapist, Imaging)

Support on the Unit

CNA Ratio:
- Med Surg: 6-12 patients for 1-2 techs
- ED: One CNA assigned to the unit
One charge nurse available 24/7 responsible for medical surgical, ED, and outpatient areas
Phlebotomy staff on campus during business hours, then on-call
IV/VAT Team available as a resource through the charge nurse
Respiratory Therapy coverage Monday-Friday from 7 AM to 3 PM, no on-call requirements
No hospitalist coverage

Charting System

EPIC (required)
Space Lab

Floating

Travelers are required to work across all areas of the critical access hospital including Medical Surgical, Outpatient Infusion, and ED; it is essential to have ED experience.

Orientation

Initial orientation includes time with management and EPIC/Ilearn training online
Subsequent days include one spent on Medical Surgical and one in ED
Opportunities to float multiple times per shift

Scheduling

Mix of mid-shifts and day shifts; entire team works rotating shifts with no set weekends
Self-scheduling is in place
Holiday assignments will be given as needed
Approval for time off should be completed before the start of the contract
