Specialized Experience (for positions at GS-4 and above): Experience that provided knowledge of a body of basic laws and regulations, law enforcement operations, practices, and techniques and involved responsibility for maintaining order and protecting life and property. Creditable specialized experience may have been gained in work on a police force; through service as a military police officer; in work providing visitor protection and law enforcement in parks, forests, or other natural resource or recreational environments; in performing criminal investigative duties; or in other work that provided the required knowledge and skills.

Investigation of Fitness

A character investigation may be conducted on applicants selected for employment. The purpose of such an investigation is to secure evidence of the candidate's honesty, integrity, general character, and loyalty to the U.S. Government. Such investigations will be conducted under the security requirements of the hiring agency.

Medical Requirements: The duties of these positions require moderate to arduous physical exertion and/or duties of a hazardous nature. The following medical requirements apply to all applicants: good near and distant vision, ability to distinguish basic colors, and ability to hear the conversational voice. Agencies may establish additional, job-related physical or medical requirements provided that the specific position(s) involves the arduous or hazardous duties to which the physical requirements relate.

Applicants and employees must have the capacity to perform the essential functions of the position without risk to themselves or others. Applicants and employees must possess emotional and mental stability. In most instances, a specific medical condition or impairment will not automatically disqualify an applicant or employee. A medical condition or impairment is disqualifying only if the condition, for good medical reason, precludes assignment to or warrants restriction from the duties of the specific position. For some positions, the loss or impairment of a specific function may be compensated for by the satisfactory use of a prosthesis or mechanical aid. Reasonable accommodation shall also be considered in determining an applicant's ability to perform the duties of a position. Reasonable accommodation may include, but is not limited to the use of assistive devices, job modification or restructuring, provision of readers and interpreters, or adjusted work schedules.

All positions involving Federal motor vehicle operation carry the additional medical requirements specified in 5 CFR 930 and the "General Policies and Instructions" section of this Manual.

The duties of this position require moderate to arduous physical exertion and/or duties of a hazardous nature. The following medical requirements apply to all applicants: Vision in both eyes. Uncorrected distance vision in each eye at least 20/70 on Snellen scale, corrected to at least 20/20 Snellen. Ability to distinguish basic colors and normal depth perception and peripheral vision. Hearing in both ears. Using an audiometer, there should be no loss of 25 or more decibels at the 500, 1000, and 2000 Hz level in both ears. This represents the hearing required to perform public safety functions. If a hearing aid is necessary, suitable testing procedures shall be used to assure auditory acuity equivalent to the above requirement. Applicants must have the capacity to perform the essential functions of the position without risk to themselves or others, and they must possess emotional and mental stability.

A physical examination is required prior to being hired for this position.

All law enforcement personnel must successfully complete the following annual requirements: Physical examination conducted by a physician, provided by the DIAC/Pentagon Health Clinic during the employee's birth month, in accordance with DIA law enforcement physical health standards, and an annual physical fitness evaluation test.

Other Related Requirements: All law enforcement personnel must maintain the following: semi-annual firearms proficiency standards as delineated in DIAI 5200.001; annual re-qualification on all assigned equipment, to include: expandable baton, OC spray, and handcuffs; and CPR and First Aid certifications. Completion of the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) Uniformed Police Training Program is required during the first year of employment.

Additional information

DIA positions are Defense Civilian Intelligence Personnel System (DCIPS) positions in the Excepted Service under 10 U.S.C. 1601. All applicants must be U.S. citizens at the time of application. Applicants must meet the agency's conditions of employment, to include, but not limited to, satisfactory completion of an initial special background investigation and periodic reinvestigation, completion of any required medical examination and physical requirements, completion of any required personal interviews, favorable completion of any required initial or aperiodic polygraph examinations, completion of any required drug test, satisfactory completion of a two-year Defense Civilian Intelligence Personnel System trial period, and completion of a civilian mobility agreement. All employees are required to sign an agreement not to disclose, in any fashion, classified information to unauthorized persons. All civilian employees are required to participate in the DoD Direct Deposit/Electronic Fund Transfer of Pay (DD/EFT) Program. DIA employees and applicants for employment are protected by federal laws, from discrimination. Employees and applicants are also protected against retaliation. Consistent with federal laws, acts of retaliation against an employee who engages in a protected activity, whistle blowing, or the exercise of any appeal or grievance right provided by law, will not be tolerated.
