Role Description The Civil/Excavation Estimator is a full-time, on-site role based in Springtown, TX, responsible for developing accurate, competitive cost estimates for excavation, grading, trenching, utility installation, concrete, and related civil construction projects bid by L5 Excavation, LLC. This role is central to the company's growth — it drives bid volume, margin discipline, and project selection.
Day-to-day responsibilities include reviewing project plans and specifications, performing quantity takeoffs, analyzing site conditions, and gathering vendor and subcontractor quotes to build fully loaded cost estimates. The Estimator works directly with the CFO, project managers, and field superintendents to price work from takeoff through final submission — collaborating to confirm scope and production rates, and visiting job sites as needed to ground-check assumptions.
Additional duties include maintaining up-to-date pricing and production data, tracking bid deadlines, and assisting with value engineering to improve project feasibility and profitability. The role also involves maintaining organized estimate files, supporting contract negotiations with clear cost breakdowns, and communicating professionally with clients, suppliers, and internal team members.
Essential duties and Responsibilities
• Review bid packages, project plans, specifications, and addenda to develop comprehensive scopes of work for civil and excavation projects
• Perform quantity takeoffs for earthwork, grading, clearing, utility work (water, sewer, storm), subgrade prep, and concrete flatwork/structures
• Solicit and evaluate subcontractor and material supplier quotes; develop bid packages for subcontractors where applicable
• Develop fully loaded cost estimates incorporating labor, equipment, materials, subcontractors, overhead, and margin
• Coordinate with field superintendents to validate production rates and equipment assumptions
• Analyze project risk factors including site conditions, schedule constraints, bond/insurance requirements, and owner/GC history
• Prepare and submit complete bid proposals within required deadlines
• Maintain an organized bid log and follow up on submitted proposals to understand win/loss outcomes
• Support project handoff to operations, including budget setup and buy-out of major cost items post-award
• Monitor and report on market pricing trends for materials and subcontractor labor in DFW and surrounding markets
• Maintain bid files, estimating templates, and unit cost databases to support continuous improvement
• Assist with change order pricing on active projects as requested by project managers
• Conduct post-bid and post-project analysis on all awarded work, comparing estimated versus actual costs, labor hours, equipment utilization, and margin; document findings and incorporate lessons learned into future estimates and unit cost databases
Qualifications
Required:
• 3+ years of estimating experience in civil construction, excavation, grading, or underground utilities
• Demonstrated experience performing earthwork quantity takeoffs independently
• Proficiency with estimating software (HCSS HeavyBid, B2W Estimate, Agtek, or equivalent)
• Proficiency with takeoff software (Bluebeam Revu, On-Screen Takeoff, or equivalent)
• Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Excel
• Ability to read and interpret civil construction drawings and specifications
• Valid driver's license and ability to travel to project sites across Texas
Preferred:
• Experience estimating TxDOT or municipal public works projects
• Familiarity with data center, industrial, or commercial site development
• Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or related field
• Experience with Procore or similar project management platforms
Physical Requirements
