CORRECTIONAL OFFICER SERGEANT (Sykesville Academy)

Main Purpose of Job The incumbent instructs a designed curriculum within the assigned Correctional Entrance Level Training Academy to ensure compliance with standards established by the Professional Development and Training Division and Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission (MPCTC), or other regulatory agency having jurisdiction. The incumbent will also assist academy students as mentors or coaches to resolve any logistical or programmatic issues to ensure all curriculums are disseminated in a professional and adult‑based learning manner. The incumbent is the first contact with all newly hired Correctional Officers, therefore must exhibit a high level of professionalism both within and outside the classroom setting. As a CO III, the incumbent has lead responsibility for newly hired Correctional Officers assigned to the CELTP program and CO II instructors. Minimum Qualifications High School diploma or high school equivalency certificate acceptable to the Maryland State Board of Education. Three years of experience as a Correctional Officer involving the custody and security of adult inmates. Education substitutions: an accredited college/university degree of 60 credit hours for one year of experience, with at least 15 credit hours in criminal justice or related social sciences. Experience substitution: equivalent State experience in other corrections classifications involving daily contact with inmates, comparable to a Correctional Officer II. U.S. Armed Forces military service experience in correctional classifications equivalent to a Correctional Officer II on a year‑for‑year basis. Licenses, Registrations and Certifications Motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland for duties requiring vehicle operation. Class B Commercial Driver's License with passenger and air brakes endorsements for duties operating buses for inmate transportation. Special Requirements Successful completion of Maryland Correctional Training Commission prescriptive training during probationary period. U.S. Citizenship or Resident Alien status, at least 21 years of age, completed background investigation, oral interview, and physical examination. Entrance Level Firearms Training prescribed by the Maryland Correctional Training Commission (codes 12.10.04.04 and 12.10.04.05) and demonstrated practical knowledge and proficiency in safe use of firearms on a periodic basis. Available 24‑hour call‑in; must provide reachable telephone number. Substance abuse testing in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulations 17.04.09. Sick Leave: fifteen days accumulated per year. Parental Leave: up to sixty days paid upon birth or adoption. Holidays: at least twelve State holidays per year.
