JOB TITLE: Lead Fleet Mechanic – Evening Shift

LOCATION:  Santa Barbara

FLSA EMPLOYMENT CLASSIFICATION: Non-Exempt

POSITION SUMMARY:  The Lead Fleet Mechanic is a highly skilled, hands-on technical leader responsible for performing advanced diagnosis, repair, and preventive maintenance on the fleet while providing day-to-day technical guidance and oversight to evening-shift Fleet Mechanics. This role serves as a working lead, combining extensive mechanical expertise with the ability to coordinate work, troubleshoot complex issues, maintain quality and safety standards, and support the development of other mechanics. 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include but are not limited to the following. 

• Coordinate and prioritize daily evening-shift maintenance activities to ensure trucks are available for operational needs. 
• Assist with assigning and balancing work among the evening shift mechanics based on workload, skill level, and priorities. 
• Assist with parts identification, requests, and maintaining appropriate inventory levels.
• Provide an end-of-shift handoff report to Management communicating the status of trucks and equipment, completed and outstanding repairs, concerns, parts or resources needed for the following day shift, and any work requiring follow-up.
• Utilize the fleet maintenance software system to clearly document repair orders and any related information such as parts usage, time allocation, and status updates. 
• Serve as the hands-on technical lead for evening shift Fleet mechanics, providing guidance and support on complex repairs and maintenance issues. 
• Performs quality control inspections on work performed by mechanics to ensure repairs are completed accurately, safely, and in an efficient manner. 
• Diagnoses complex mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and other system issues using appropriate diagnostic tools and equipment. 
• Performs complex preventive maintenance tasks and repairs on heavy-duty trucks that require mechanical knowledge and skill, including repairs on major systems and their components.
• Investigate malfunctions and breakdowns.
• Rebuilds and installs diesel, gasoline, and compressed natural gas engines by disassembling, inspecting, measuring, and evaluating internal and external engine parts, obtaining new parts, reassembling and installing engines, and testing equipment in accordance with technical requirements.
• Identifies and determines parts required for repairs of disassembled units. 
• Road tests the fleet when necessary to diagnose malfunctions or to ensure that they are working properly.
• Reviews and completes the Driver Vehicle Inspection Reports (DVIR).
• Utilizes fleet maintenance software program to document and track repair orders and any related information such as parts usage, time allocation, and status updates. 
• Monitors and maintains a clean, safe work area in compliance with Corporate / OSHA Standards and performs all work in accordance with established safety procedures.
• Performs other duties as assigned. 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This job has no direct supervisory responsibilities. The role invests time in coaching and mentoring. Contributes to knowledge sharing in the area of technical expertise.

QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. • Minimum (8) years of advanced-level mechanic experience maintaining, repairing, and diagnosing heavy-duty trucks and equipment. 
• Demonstrated ability to serve as a technical lead and provide guidance, direction, and support to other mechanics. 
• Ability to provide clear and accurate shift-to-shift communication regarding status of fleet, outstanding repairs, concerns, and follow-up work. 
• Experience in coordinating and prioritizing maintenance and repair work.
• Highly proficient in troubleshooting and computer diagnosis.
• Ability to read, understand, and interpret schematics.
• Must be able to diagnose, repair, and work on most, if not all, facets of heavy-duty trucks and equipment.
• Knowledge and ability to use hand and power tools and have tools to perform repairs. 
• Familiarity in using a computer is necessary to utilize fleet maintenance software programs to manage, document, and report repair work. 
• Ability to communicate effectively with mechanics, operations, and management.
• Ability to have good decision-making ability.
• Experience and ability to be certified for fall protection.
• Experience and ability to be certified as an operator of a boom lift, scissor lift, and forklift.
• Must possess a valid driver’s license; a commercial license is preferred. 
• Ability to work an evening shift and provide a reliable handoff report to management for the following day shift. 
• Certified Tire Industry Association (TIA) is a plus.

EDUCATION 

High School Diploma or GED required. Preferred ASE Certifications and/or other Trade School diploma/certification.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs. Must have some computer literacy and the ability and willingness to learn vehicle maintenance repair code terminology.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

CERTICATES, LICENSE, REGISTRATION

• Valid California Class C Driver’s License
• Commercial Driver’s License Class A or B is a plus

While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and outside weather conditions. Work is performed primarily in a shop environment, occasional field environments that may require some travel from site to site and is frequently exposed to dust, grease, fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; high, precarious places; extreme cold; extreme heat; and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
