Directional Drill Locator

Job Overview We are seeking a skilled and safety-focused Directional Drill Locator to join our team. In this role, you will assist the Drill Operator by accurately locating and tracking the drill head during horizontal directional drilling (HDD) operations. The ideal candidate will have experience interpreting locator signals, reading blueprints, verifying utility locate marks, and maintaining safe drilling practices in the telecommunications and utility industry. The Directional Drill Locator plays a critical role in ensuring drilling accuracy, preventing utility damage, and supporting successful underground fiber and utility installations. Responsibilities Assist the Drill Operator in locating and tracking the drill head during drilling operations Interpret underground transmitter signals including location, depth, pitch, temperature, and direction Verify utility locate marks and confirm the location of existing underground facilities Set up, calibrate, and operate locating equipment, guidance systems, and survey tools Perform pre-drilling site inspections to identify potential obstacles and hazards Read and interpret blueprints, utility maps, and construction plans Collaborate with project managers, operators, and crew members to complete projects safely and efficiently Monitor drilling operations to ensure compliance with project specifications and safety regulations Troubleshoot locating or drilling issues as they arise in the field Conduct routine inspections and basic maintenance on drilling and locating equipment Maintain accurate records of drilling activities, equipment usage, and project progress Assist with fiber optic cable installation, pulling, splicing, and testing as needed Safely operate company vehicles and construction equipment Follow all company safety policies and OSHA regulations Requirements Previous experience as a Directional Drill Locator in the telecommunications or utility industry required Strong knowledge of horizontal directional drilling (HDD) practices and locating equipment Ability to read and interpret blueprints, utility maps, and construction plans Familiarity with underground utility locating procedures and safety standards Ability to safely operate construction equipment and hand tools Strong problem-solving and communication skills Ability to work in various outdoor weather conditions and physically demanding environments Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds Willingness to work overtime, nights, weekends, and travel as needed Valid Driver’s License required CDL License preferred with a satisfactory driving record Summary As a Directional Drill Locator, you will be an essential part of our underground utility construction team, helping ensure safe and accurate drilling operations for telecommunications and utility projects.
