Pay: $22/hr - $24/hr

Shift: Night shift - Sunday - Friday / OT daily

Location: Elk Grove, CA

Job Description

The Sanitation Worker is responsible for thoroughly cleaning and sanitizing all production equipment and facility infrastructure in a food manufacturing environment. This role ensures strict adherence to food safety, sanitation, and safety procedures while using designated personal protective equipment and handling sanitation chemicals and cleaning equipment correctly. The position involves disassembling and reassembling plant equipment, protecting sensitive components during cleaning, and supporting overall janitorial and general labor tasks as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Perform all cleaning tasks in accordance with established Safety and Food Safety Standards.

  • Participate in safety training programs and actively contribute to safety initiatives that promote a strong culture of safety.

  • Ensure full compliance with regulatory and third‑party requirements, including SQF, GMP, HACCP, OSHA, Food Safety, Food Fraud/Defense, Allergens, Organic, and Gluten Free standards.

  • Learn and apply proper cleaning procedures for different types of machinery, including understanding and using the correct chemicals for each application.

  • Rotate cleaning areas on a daily basis to maintain consistent sanitation across the facility.

  • Cover all electronic devices and control panels with plastic prior to performing wet cleaning in production areas to prevent damage.

  • Use air nozzles in designated areas while consistently wearing required PPE such as ear protection and bump cap.

  • Inspect machinery and equipment after cleaning to verify that all surfaces are completely clean and that all parts are properly reassembled.

  • Store all cleaning equipment and tools in their designated locations and ensure they are not left in unauthorized areas.

  • Follow proper Lock Out/Tag Out procedures, ensuring mixers and corn and flour machines are completely turned off and secured with safety locks before cleaning.

  • Work collaboratively as part of a team to clean any type of machinery as required by production and sanitation schedules.

  • Correctly weigh all waste generated by machines to obtain accurate totals and ensure waste records are precise.

  • Report any safety hazards to the supervisor, including open electrical boxes, loose cables or wires, or any condition that could cause an accident.

  • Use ladders or scissor lifts only when trained and authorized, and never climb on top of machinery to perform cleaning.

  • Label all chemicals in secondary containers according to OSHA GHS procedures.

  • Operate trash and recycling machines safely and notify the supervisor when they reach maximum capacity.

  • Wear designated Personal Protective Equipment at all times, including safety goggles, hairnets, apron, and boots when working in the washroom.

  • Assist with janitorial duties as needed, including cleaning restrooms, office areas, and general company premises.

  • Operate cleaning equipment and sanitation tools in a safe and efficient manner, protecting sensitive equipment from damage during the sanitation process.

  • Perform general labor tasks such as sweeping, sanitizing, custodial work, and supporting food production and packaging areas as required.

  • Drive and operate forklifts and other industrial equipment as required for sanitation and material handling activities.

  • Maintain high standards of housekeeping throughout the production and facility areas.

  • Adhere to company attendance and punctuality policies and maintain reliability and schedule flexibility, including working weekends, holidays, and off‑shifts as needed.

  • Comply with all food safety policies and third‑party certification requirements at all times.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned to support sanitation, production, and facility maintenance.

Essential Skills

  • Grade school education; High School Diploma or GED is a plus.

  • 1–2 years of experience working in food manufacturing or similar industries.

  • 1–2 years of experience with sanitation procedures for food manufacturing equipment or similar experience.

  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills.

  • Proficient basic math skills for measurements, calculations, and waste weighing.

  • Proficient analytical and problem‑solving skills to identify and resolve sanitation and safety issues.

  • Basic computer skills for training, documentation, and reporting.

  • Ability to understand and correctly use sanitation chemicals and resources in compliance with regulatory regulations.

  • Ability to disassemble and reassemble plant equipment safely and accurately.

  • Strong teamwork skills and ability to collaborate effectively with others.

  • Self‑motivation and ability to work with little or no supervision while maintaining productivity.

  • Ability to work safely and efficiently with water and chemicals for extended periods.

  • Commitment to working in a safe manner while maximizing productivity and efficiency.

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds on a regular basis.

  • Ability to perform work while standing for prolonged periods.

  • Ability to bend, stoop, crawl, reach, grasp, and work in adverse and awkward positions as required by cleaning tasks.

  • Ability to drive a forklift and operate industrial equipment such as pallet jacks and scissor lifts.

  • Reliability, punctuality, and flexibility to work weekends, holidays, and off‑shifts as needed.

  • Ability to remain in a consistent state of alertness and perform essential job functions in a safe manner.

  • Ability to comply with and follow all food safety and third‑party certification policies, including SQF, Gluten‑Free, and Organic standards.

  • Strict adherence to a drug and alcohol zero‑tolerance policy.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience in food production, food processing, or packaging environments.

  • Industrial cleaning, general production, or custodial work.

  • Experience with GMP practices and sanitation in manufacturing settings.

  • Familiarity with janitorial duties in restrooms, office areas, and facility premises.

  • Experience using trash and recycling machines and other sanitation equipment.

  • Strong housekeeping habits and attention to detail in maintaining a clean work environment.

  • Ability to accurately weigh and record waste totals.

  • Comfort working around rotating and reciprocating parts and industrial machinery.

  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities and different cleaning areas on a daily basis.

Work Environment

This role operates in a food manufacturing facility where continual walking and standing on wet, hard surfaces is required. Work involves frequent climbing and descending steps, as well as regular bending, kneeling, squatting, stooping, reaching, pulling, pushing, and lifting up to 50 pounds. The position requires driving and operating industrial equipment such as forklifts, scissor lifts, and pallet jacks, often in proximity to rotating and reciprocating machinery parts. Employees are exposed to varying cool and hot temperatures and consistent industrial noise levels. Standing for long periods of time is common, and tasks may be performed in confined or awkward positions. Personal Protective Equipment, including safety goggles, hairnets, aprons, boots, ear protection, and bump caps, must be worn as specified, particularly when working in washrooms or using air and water nozzles. The environment emphasizes strict adherence to safety, food safety, and sanitation protocols at all times.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $22.00 - $24.00/hr.
