Architect of the Capitol
Summary This position is located in the Architect of the Capitol, Office of the Chief Engineer, Construction Division, Construction Branch. We are seeking a temporary journey-level electrician to perform electrical functions including maintenance, repair, installation and inspection of electrical service in the Capitol Complex historic buildings. We have five vacancies to fill. The position requires work experience at the Journey Level and must be reflected in the applicant's resume. Responsibilities Night Shift: 7:00 PM to 5:30 AM (Monday through Thursday) Day Shift: 4:00 AM to 2:30 PM (Monday through Thursday (Hours may change due to Operational Needs of Management) THIS POSITION IS ESSENTIAL--EMPLOYEE IS REQUIRED TO REPORT TO WORK DURING EMERGENCIES AND INCLEMENT WEATHER SITUATIONS. WORK SCHEDULE MAY INCLUDE HOLIDAYS AND WEEKENDS ON A REGULAR AND RECURRING BASIS. The position requires Journey Level Experience and the experience must be reflected in the applicant's work history and resume. Major Duties Electrical/Electronic Maintenance and Repair Performs repair and maintenance work on the electrical and electronic components of circuits, systems and controls, such as air conditioning units, power distribution systems, lighting control systems, intrusion/detection systems, electronic door/entry control systems, fire detection & alarm systems, station batteries, uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), Automatic Transfer Switches (ATS's) and kitchen appliances. Repairs equipment without the original schematics or drawings. The electrician either must research the schematic via the internet or manufacturer, or in some cases improvise and repair the equipment without schematics or drawings. Follows established safety practices of the trade. Electrical Installation and Troubleshooting Installs, assembles, troubleshoots, modifies, repairs, and maintains routine and standard electrical lines, circuits, systems, and associated fixtures, controls, and equipment. Responsibilities include troubleshooting electrical devices containing electronic components in order to isolate the cause of the malfunction of electrical control systems, analog/digital controls, and solid state motor control circuits in equipment. Troubleshoots and repairs electronic ballasts, electronic dimmer panels, automatic transfer switches, motor control centers, transformers, small power tool repair, secondary power distribution lines, and circuits used to supply a wide range of voltage, amperage, phase, and frequency requirements to distribution panels, switch gear, power and control circuits; industrial multiphase systems; thermocouple sensors; electrical intrusion alarm and fire alarm systems; emergency warning systems; lighting protection systems; high intensity lighting systems with associated controls; target mechanisms; AC and DC rectification systems; galvanic and impressed current cathodic protection systems which prevent corrosion on underground or submerged equipment and pipes; amplifier circuits; and related electrical equipment. Independently works from building plans, blueprints, wiring diagrams, engineering drawings, and electrical maintenance and repair manuals. Troubleshoots, tests, and loads new and existing electrical lines, circuits, systems, and associated fixtures, controls, and equipment. Determines location of existing electrical devices and service entrances and places new ones. Locates ground faults in complex electronic/electrical networks. Traces hard-to-locate defects or problems. Interprets and applies the National Electrical Code, local codes, building plans, blueprints, wiring diagrams, and engineering drawings, and uses trade formulas to calculate common properties, e.g., voltage, voltage drop and current capability in series and parallel circuits, resistance, inductance, capacitance, power factor, current flow, and temperature and length in single and multiple raceways, conduits, gutters, and cable trays. Provides technical guidance to Workers and Helpers during cable pulling, tagging, and securing as well as cutting, bending, and mounting electrical conduit. Completes installation of electrical lines, circuits, systems, and associated fixtures and controls in industrial complexes and/or in buildings with complex electrical loads, such as computer complexes. Electrical Layout or Design Work Performs the electrical aspects of construction and renovation work. Installs electrical devices (conduit, outlets, circuits, etc.) in rooms for which there may not be complete blueprints or schematics available as a result of the age of the facility. The Electrician must improvise to install the updated circuits and equipment in antiquated facilities without adversely affecting the exiting design or architecture. Plans and lays out trades work which includes but is not limited to measuring, cutting, routing, placement, type, size, gauge, balance, load, continuity, and safe operation of electrical lines, circuits, systems, equipment and controls. Complies with NEC requirements and building codes. Prepares estimates of material and equipment needed and submits requisitions to supervisor for materials, equipment, and supplies necessary to perform the electrical and electronic duties. Determines and places distribution panels, boxes, fittings, and connections and installs wiring, couplings, conduit, relays, fixtures, transformers and other electrical devices including electrical service entrances. This is strictly a temporary appointment where there is no permanent need or permanent funding available for the work involved and that the temporary appointment is limited in duration. The temporary position may also be terminated at any time due to lack of work and/or lack of funds without any advance notice. As a non-permanent employee, you may also be separated for failure to meet management's expectations, with no advance notice.
