Safety and Workers' Compensation Consultant

Job Overview Position: Safety Consultant (JB) (NS), Agency: Administrative Office of the Courts, Human Resources Division. Grade: JB20. Salary range: $59,463.00 – $95,414.00. Eligibility: open only to current North Carolina state government employees. Responsibilities Conduct regular comprehensive safety inspections of county courthouses and Judicial Branch facilities to identify, assess, mitigate, and monitor risks and hazards. Investigate accidents, incidents, and near misses; determine root causes and recommend preventive actions. Administer the full lifecycle of workers’ compensation claims, serving as liaison among employer, injured employee, and third‑party claims administrator. Coordinate workers’ compensation claims by preparing cases, attending hearings, and ensuring compliance with NC statutes. Track, analyze, and report safety and health data, including OSHA reports and statistical trends. Plan and coordinate security/multi‑hazard drills and emergency response activities for the NC Judicial Center and statewide offices. Develop and deliver safety training programs for staff at all levels, both in‑person and virtual. Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with county officials, administrators, and stakeholders; serve as NCJC Safe Leader, member of the Emergency Alert Team, and Chair of the Safety Committee. Perform additional safety and health duties as assigned by the HR Manager. Qualifications Graduation from a four‑year college or university, preferably with a degree in human resources management, safety management, or industrial technology; or an equivalent combination of education and at least two years of direct experience in occupational safety and health, workers’ compensation, or human resources. Current certification in Occupational Safety and Health (CIH, CSP) and Certified Workers’ Compensation Professional (CWCP) preferred. Knowledge of state and federal safety and health standards, OSHA guidelines, North Carolina Workers’ Compensation Act, and Judicial Branch leave programs. Skill in performing safety inspections, gathering and analyzing data, conducting audits and investigations, and preparing technical reports. Excellent communication, conflict resolution, and training abilities; proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel). Ability to identify unsafe conditions, recommend corrective actions, persuade management, and deliver training. Dependability, responsiveness, and credibility; ability to build trust with stakeholders and manage a workers’ compensation caseload.
