Archaeological Technician
Tetra Tech is seeking an Archaeological Technician with experience in historic resource identification, Section 106 documentation, NEPA and Puerto Rico environmental policies, document preparation, and technical report writing. The Archaeological Technician will collaborate with internal staff and the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) to help avoid and minimize impacts to NRHP-eligible resources.
The Archaeological Technician will provide assistance to SOI professionals by conducting field surveys of historic resources, preparing Section 106 documentation, including Historic Resources Survey Reports and Assessments of Effects, and coordinating with state and federal resource agencies. Additionally, this position will work as part of a team of environmental professionals to prepare National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) documentation, coordinate environmental resource studies, and resolve environmental issues for a variety of projects.

- Research data and draft archaeological descriptions.
- Prepare technical reports.
- Participating in On-Site Archaeological Monitoring duties
- Assist with coordination of field teams working on field assignments.
- Provide assistance with archaeological field reconnaissance, excavate shovel tests, conduct pedestrian survey, excavate test units, identify cultural artifacts and features, systematically record field information.
- Work with and regularly communicate with colleagues and take direction from a supervisor, and project managers.
- Write clearly and use a computer such as a field iPad for capturing field notes and communicating with co-workers and supervisors.
- Use a computer to track time spent on projects and for reporting expenses for reimbursement.
- Additional duties, as assigned.
Familiarity with the National Historic Preservation Act (including Section 106), the National Environmental Policy Act, and requirements of other Federal regulatory agencies such as the FHWA, USACE, DOE, EPA, BLM, etc. and with specific state guidelines and requirements.
Survey work requires skills in identifying cultural artifacts relating to a broad spectrum of cultural time periods.
Shovel testing, pedestrian survey, and recording of field observations on digital media are important skills.
Candidate must be hard-working, good-natured, capable of working with others, capable of communicating with co-workers clearly, capable of giving clear direction to field teams and capable of taking direction from project managers and supervisors.
Candidate must be in good physical condition, able to carry up to 35 lbs. while walking and possibly hiking and able to bend, lift relatively heavy loads, and tolerate some weather extremes (heat and cold).
Written and verbal Spanish and English proficiency.
Must possess a valid driver's license with a clean driving record without restrictions.
BA/BS in Archaeology, Anthropology, or a related field.
2 or more years of professional experience in cultural resource management.
Experience composing archaeological descriptions and historic contexts for survey reports and preservation planning documents.
Proficiency with ArcGIS Online, Microsoft Office 365, and Adobe Acrobat.
All candidates must be in Puerto Rico to be considered for the position.
This is a remote position with intermittent travel to participate in archaeological monitoring on the island.
The salary range for this position is $50,000 – $55,000 (depending on experience). The base salary range represents the low and high end of the compensation scale for this role. Actual salaries will be determined based on location, experience, responsibilities, and qualifications.

Work Schedule: Monday–Friday, 8AM–5PM (no expected overtime)
Travel Requirements: 5%–10% (for archaeological monitoring activities)
