Dearborn Street, 5th Floor, Chicago, IL 60604, United States Appointment Type: Attorney Permanent Application Deadline: September 30, 2026 (rolling review until all positions filled) About the Office The United States Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Illinois (NDIL) has more than 160 Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSAs) working in its Criminal and Civil Divisions. NDIL has offices in Chicago and Rockford. Criminal AUSAs handle drug trafficking, firearms, immigration, terrorism, cyber‑crimes, fraud, and public corruption. Civil AUSAs handle defensive and affirmative litigation on behalf of the United States, including medical malpractice, employment discrimination, FOIA, immigration, civil rights, environmental, food and drug, health care, and civil fraud. AUSAs conduct research and writing and participate in all aspects of federal law and practice. Job Description Represent the United States, its agencies, and officials in civil litigation. Handle both defensive and affirmative civil matters of increasing complexity as your experience grows. Responsibilities Develop legal strategies, conduct research, draft pleadings, motions, and opinions, negotiate settlements, and represent the government in court proceedings before the United States District Court and the United States Court of Appeals. Qualifications Required: J.D. degree (or equivalent); active membership in good standing of a U.S. bar; at least 1 year of post‑J.D. legal experience (minimum 2 years required). Preferred: Excellent academics, significant litigation experience, civil law experience, strong legal writing skills, demonstrated commitment to public service. U.S. citizenship required. Compensation Salary range: $85,796 to $197,100 (includes 30.86% locality pay) depending on years of professional attorney experience.
