Location: Fishers, IN Job Type: Contract Multiple openings per shift: 1st, 2nd, or 3rd
Job Summary: This will be a full-time, direct placement position. Laboratory Technicians play a crucial role in the healthcare system by performing a wide range of diagnostic tests that are essential for detecting, diagnosing, and treating diseases. Working in medical laboratories, Laboratory Technicians are responsible for collecting and analyzing biological samples, such as blood, urine, and tissue, using various laboratory techniques and equipment. The accuracy and timeliness of the tests performed by Laboratory Technicians directly impact patient care and treatment decisions. In addition to performing tests, Laboratory Technicians are responsible for maintaining laboratory equipment, ensuring the quality and reliability of test results, and adhering to safety and regulatory standards.
Key Responsibilities:
- Sample Collection and Processing: Collect, label, and process biological samples, including blood, urine, tissue, and other bodily fluids, following proper procedures to ensure the integrity of the samples. Prepare specimens for analysis, including centrifugation, separation, and dilution, depending on the type of test to be performed. Ensure that all samples are handled with care and stored appropriately to prevent contamination or degradation.
- Laboratory Testing and Analysis: Perform a variety of routine and specialized laboratory tests, including blood counts, chemical analyses, microbiological tests, and other diagnostic procedures. Operate and maintain laboratory equipment, such as analyzers, microscopes, and spectrophotometers, ensuring accurate calibration and functioning. Analyze test results and report findings to the Laboratory Supervisor, Medical Laboratory Scientist, or ordering physician in a timely and accurate manner. Collaborate with the laboratory team to troubleshoot and resolve any issues related to testing procedures or equipment.
- Quality Control and Assurance: Implement and adhere to quality control procedures to ensure the accuracy, precision, and reliability of test results. Participate in regular quality assurance activities, including proficiency testing, calibration of instruments, and review of test results. Document and report any deviations from standard procedures or quality control issues to the Laboratory Supervisor.
- Documentation and Record Keeping: Accurately document all laboratory procedures, test results, and observations in the laboratory information system (LIS) or electronic health record (EHR) system. Maintain detailed records of specimen handling, equipment maintenance, and quality control activities in compliance with regulatory and accreditation requirements. Ensure the confidentiality and security of patient information at all times.
- Safety and Compliance: Follow established safety protocols and infection control guidelines to minimize the risk of exposure to hazardous materials, including biological agents and chemicals. Dispose of biohazardous waste and sharps according to proper procedures and regulatory requirements. Stay informed about and comply with all federal, state, and local regulations governing laboratory operations, including those from OSHA, CLIA, and CAP.
- Equipment Maintenance and Troubleshooting: Perform routine maintenance and calibration of laboratory equipment to ensure optimal performance and accuracy. Troubleshoot equipment malfunctions and coordinate repairs with the appropriate service personnel as needed. Monitor inventory levels of reagents, supplies, and equipment, and reorder as necessary to ensure continuous laboratory operations.
- Professional Development and Collaboration: Participate in continuing education and professional development activities to stay current with advancements in laboratory technology and testing methodologies. Collaborate with other laboratory staff, healthcare providers, and departments to ensure efficient and effective laboratory operations. Provide guidance and mentorship to new or less experienced laboratory personnel as needed.
Requirements:
- Education: Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, or a related field from an accredited program. Completion of a clinical laboratory training program is preferred.
- Licensure/Certification: Certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) by a recognized certifying agency such as ASCP (American Society for Clinical Pathology) or AMT (American Medical Technologists) is preferred.
- Experience: Previous experience in a clinical laboratory setting is preferred, but new graduates with relevant training are encouraged to apply.
- Skills: Proficiency in laboratory techniques, including specimen collection, preparation, and analysis. Strong attention to detail and accuracy in performing tests and interpreting results. Excellent organizational and time management skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team. Effective communication skills for interacting with healthcare providers and documenting laboratory findings. Technical aptitude for operating and troubleshooting laboratory equipment.
- Physical Requirements: Ability to stand for extended periods and perform repetitive tasks. Manual dexterity and visual acuity for precise sample handling and analysis. Ability to lift and carry laboratory equipment and supplies as needed. Ability to work with potentially hazardous materials while adhering to safety protocols.
