Position Overview The NYC Department of Consumer and Worker Protection (DCWP) protects consumer and worker rights through enforcement, licensing and research. The Inspector (Consumer & Worker) field enforces key laws and supports NY consumer protection. Responsibilities Conduct field enforcement, undercover inspections and participate in multi‑agency enforcement actions. Enforce weights and measures laws via testing, sealing, condemning or confiscating devices. Inspect & investigate trade practices to eliminate consumer deception, across all licensed trades. Perform physical tasks such as lifting, walking, using mass transit and climbing stairs. Complete reports of complaints, violations, and special inspections using tablets/computers. Prepare summonses and testify at hearings. Use computer systems for email, evidence storage and research in agency web‑based systems. Communicate clearly and concisely both written and verbally. Perform administrative duties such as copying, scanning. Maintain a professional demeanor with excellent customer service skills. Perform other related work as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Four‑year high‑school diploma or equivalent plus four years of full‑time investigative or inspection experience with a consumer or worker protection agency, OR a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college, OR a satisfactory combination of education and experience equivalent to the first option. All candidates must possess a valid New York State Motor Vehicle Driver License at appointment, and maintain it throughout employment. Preferred Skills Similar to minimum qualifications but with higher academic credit thresholds (60 semester credits per year of experience). 55a Program This position is open to qualified persons with a disability eligible for the 55-a Program.
