Job Summary:
The Tutor is responsible for the planning, implementation, and supervision of activities for assigned programs that achieve predetermined program outcomes.Qualifications: Education: Bachelor's degree from accredited college or university in Education, Math, English, Engineering. Bachelor in Education preferred, Master's degree a plus. Experience: Minimum of three years of experience teaching or tutoring individual members or students in a small group, management experience is a plus. Tutor must be able to demonstrate the use of a multimedia computer system with related devices in order to run programs; to access, generate, and manipulate data; and to communicate results. Licensing Requirements:
- Missouri Department of Health & Senior Services Medical Examination Report for Caregivers and Staff must meet acceptable standards from the State of Missouri, completed within 30 days of hire.
- TB Risk Assessment and Examination completed within 30 days of hire.
- Annual results of Family Care Safety Registry background screening must be deemed acceptable by the State of Missouri.
- Annual results of nationwide background screening must meet barrier crimes standards for organizational membership with Boys & Girls Clubs or America.
- Meets qualifications and ongoing training requirements per state licensing regulations (12 hrs. annually).
- Able to lift, carry, push, pull, or roll up to 20-25 pounds.
- Capable of prolonged, extensive, or considerable standing, walking, and speaking and occasional reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, or crouching and working in front of PC monitor.
- Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word as well as convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly in addition to perceiving the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels and ability to receive detailed information through verbal communication and make fine discriminations in sounds is necessary for the safety of the children in the program.
- The employee may be subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions. Inside weather conditions provides protection from weather conditions but not necessarily temperature changes and outside environmental conditions provides no effective protection from weather.
- The employee may be subject to sufficient noise to cause the employee to shout in order to be heard above the ambient noise level.
- Local travel as well as some regional travel is required in performance of duties.
- Ability to work separately with child within a larger context of child/tutor groups.
- Routine reporting and grant deadlines; variance in work volume.
- Identifies and resolves problems in a timely manner; gathers and analyzes information skillfully; develops alternative solutions; works well in group problem solving situations; uses reason even when dealing with emotional topics.
- Understands the implications of decisions on members.
- Tutor must be able to demonstrate the use of a multimedia computer system with related devices in order to run programs; to access, generate, and manipulate data; and to communicate results.
- May handle emergency or crisis situations.
- Manages the distraction of many interruptions without losing concentration or unduly disrupting programming.
- Some weekend work is required.
- Keeps current with best practices, resources, and materials.
- Creates opportunities for members to receive personalized assistance.
- Exercises creativity and mental flexibility in presenting instruction and programming to accommodate members of widely varying learning styles, intellectual levels, and abilities.
- Voicemail and e-mail are checked daily. Attends all meetings and events and notifies appropriate staff prior to missing a meeting/event and follows up to get important information.
- Treats members and their parents with dignity and respect at all times.
- Fosters good working relationships with parents, staff, management, and other professionals in order to meet objectives.

- Types accurately, enters information into a computerized system, and uses database management software specific to membership management provided by BGCSTL.
- Prior computer/PC experience using other word processing and presentation software and database management systems is preferred. Microsoft Office programs a plus.

- Develop a growth plan for members. Utilize Progress Monitoring Assessments to identify remaining gaps and measure growth.
- View your Stride Academy Dashboard and real-time reports daily. Make modifications and adjustments as necessary based on the reports.
- Use visual means to show member gains (proven to engage members in their lessons and help them understand the value of the work they are doing). Allow them to see the graphs and data from the Individual Student Details view of your Dashboard or their Student Progress Reports.
- Provides positive feedback to members often. Congratulates members on their total questions answered, total minutes worked, academic badges, coins earned, and Star points in Club-wide contests. Rewards members with extra coins and lets them know they did a good job of meeting expectations.
- Uses Stride Academy technology to remain organized and teach smarter by:
- Utilizing Student Grouping Reports to organize small groups of members with similar skill abilities/deficiencies.
- Designing your own reporting system. Sets reminders on your email calendar for periodic data review and emails parent reports via the Reports tab.
- Using Quiz Builder to easily create quizzes that reinforce unit/lesson plans, or retest members on specific skills. Share quizzes with other BGCSTL tutors, so no one has to recreate the wheel.
- Takes appropriate action when children are injured, including both minor incidents and major accidents. Documents all types of accidents and incidents and provides to Manager or Site Coordinator/ Club Director for review before providing the information to the parent on the day of the occurrence.
- Responds immediately to children that are hurt or in distress and acts to comfort and assist the child appropriately
- Remains calm and in control while providing first aid or CPR for the child. Assesses the situation to decide if further action should be taken if necessary, calls an ambulance or parent, depending on the severity of the situation.
- Understands and complies with universal precautions to avoid contact with and control blood borne pathogens
- Knows what a "bodily fluids clean up kit" is, what items should be included in a kit, and demonstrates how to use it.
- Acts appropriately if there is contact with blood borne pathogens and takes steps to prevent transmission.
- Completes and/or reviews written documentation for behavioral incidents and provides those reports to the Manager or Site Coordinator/ Club Director.
- Appropriately reports any instances of abuse and neglect of children, as required, as a mandated reporter.
- Consistently enforces and reviews Club rules with current and new members. Executes emergency procedures.
- Demonstrates awareness of each child's limitations and abilities and uses guidance techniques accordingly, and explains rules at the child's level of understanding, using a variety of techniques.
- Anticipates and defuses disruptive behavior in children.
- Addresses problem behavior or situation, rather than labeling the child.
- Adapts the Club environment and curriculum to minimize potential challenging behaviors.
- Maintains professional boundaries in relationship with staff and families.
- Uses positive communication strategies for use families.
- Addresses children by their names and makes an effort to talk with each child every day.
- Participates in new member orientation process and club-wide events.
- Provides guidance and role modeling to members. Manages groups of members to make efficient use of time.
- Helps establish an expectation of school success, high school graduation and college attendance and begins to work toward these outcomes with members beginning at age six.
- Provides every member with opportunities to feel a sense of belonging, usefulness, competence and influence.
- Works to create a community in the Club and includes children who may be isolated.
- Creates environments and experiences that affirm and respect cultural, linguistic, ethnic and socio-economic diversity.
- Develops all Club activities with fun in mind. Builds programs consisting of creative games, activities and contests that provide maximum excitement.
- Presents lectures and discussions to group to increase members' knowledge or competence in three priority outcome areas. Delivers programming, including group activities, recreational activities, guest speakers, and field trips. Implements Club programs at the highest quality that is creative and engaging for members. Meets the developmental needs of youth and the curriculum is adapted when needed. Programs are consistent, on schedule, and carried out as planned.
- Inputs and gathers data, as appropriate, in the membership management and/or outcomes management system or other data-gathering vehicle, works with other staff to implement special projects.
- Creates a calendar of events and activities for members. Facilitates and assists with coordination of special events and other youth-oriented activities. May be required to drive Club van.
- Effectively engages parents and builds with them trusting relationships.
- Effectively implements activities that are designed to intentionally strive toward desired outcomes.
- Uses organizational logic models to guide implementation of assigned programs.
- Makes program decisions based on professional standards.
- Deadlines are consistently met.
- Includes transitions in activity plans. Does not expect children to wait unoccupied with nothing to do for long periods of time.
- Engages routinely in reflection of program implementation practices and the behavior of children and works collaboratively with supervisor to make changes if needed.

- Follows up with members to encourage continued participation.
- Accountable for Club compliance with all federal and state laws, licensing, grants, and/or contracts, as well as, company specific policies and procedures and BGCA standards.
- Plays active role in passing inspections and maintaining licensing standards.
- Is consistently at work and on time. Understands the importance of attendance and staff to child ratios.
- Ensures work responsibilities are covered when absent by providing at least 48 hours for planned absences and at least 4 hours notice for unplanned absences.
- Arrives at meetings and appointments on time.
- Engages in professional development activities, and supports the professional development of others as required by the Club Director.
