Financial Counselor – Job Description The role functions within the Patient Financial Services department at Albert Einstein Medical Center, providing financial counseling and assistance for patients, handling registration and billing tasks, and ensuring collection goals are met. Primary Responsibilities Provide exemplary customer service, identifying and resolving patient/guarantor customer service issues. Gather, input, and verify patient/guarantor demographic and financial information accurately. Explain necessary forms, obtain signatures, and complete Medical Assistance and Charity Care applications per facility guidelines. Verify benefits and obtain authorizations from insurance payers, documenting information in the registration system. Contact payors to resolve pending or denied accounts and resolve account issues. Screen patients for federal, state, or county assistance programs and complete required applications. Collect current and outstanding co‑pays, deductibles, self‑pay portions, and establish payment arrangements. Utilize registration and scheduling systems, electronic verification tools, and web‑based resources. Follow self‑pay policies, including fee schedules, medical assistance, charity care, and cashiering functions. Maintain knowledge of ICD‑10 and CPT coding and medical necessity screening processes. Perform pre‑registration functions: call physician offices, insurance payers, and patients as needed. Cross‑train for multiple department areas such as Diagnostic/Interventional, Admissions, Cashier, Pre‑Registration, Scheduling, and Emergency Department. Assist in training new team members and participate in internal committees. Maintain departmental logs and statistical reports, and assist manager with department activities. Consistently meet quality assurance standards and departmental goals regarding collections, productivity, and customer service. Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent; associate’s or bachelor’s degree preferred. Two (2) years of experience in a financial, business office, or customer service environment. One year of hospital business office experience. Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Word and Excel. Knowledge of ICD‑9 coding, medical terminology, and CPT coding. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Well‑organized, self‑motivated, positive attitude, and excellent customer service skills.
