The Construction Materials Technician supports a multi-disciplined geotechnical engineering and testing team by performing field and laboratory testing of construction materials, reviewing plans and specifications, and documenting observations to help ensure that construction projects meet applicable standards and specifications. This is an entry-level opportunity with structured training, ideal for individuals who want to build a long-term career in construction, civil engineering, or related fields.

Responsibilities

• Review civil, architectural, and structural plans and specifications in preparation for field observations on construction sites.

• Perform field observations on active construction sites to monitor work and materials for conformance with project plans and specifications.

• Document field activities, observations, and testing results accurately and thoroughly, noting conformance with or deviation from project requirements.

• Conduct field testing of concrete and soil to verify that standards and specifications are being met.

• Perform laboratory testing of concrete and soil samples in accordance with applicable standards and procedures.

• Communicate field and laboratory testing results clearly and promptly to construction services staff, geotechnical project managers, general contractors, and clients.

• Calibrate field and laboratory equipment regularly to ensure compliance with industry codes and standards.

• Use Microsoft Word and Excel to prepare, update, and maintain reports, test records, and documentation.

• Handle field and lab samples and equipment safely, including routinely lifting 20 to 40 pounds.

• Work outdoors on construction sites in varying weather conditions and occasionally in a laboratory environment.

Essential Skills

• At least 1 year of experience working in the field (outdoors) in construction, farming, environmental work, or a similar setting.

• Entry-level construction or civil experience, or progress toward a construction, civil, geology, or environmental degree or related coursework.

• High school diploma or GED.

• Effective written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to read and interpret plans, specifications, and procedures.

• Basic math skills sufficient for material calculations, measurements, and test data interpretation.

• Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel for documentation and reporting.

• Ability to routinely lift 20 to 40 pounds to handle field and lab samples and equipment.

• Willingness and ability to work outdoors on construction sites for extended periods.

• Concrete testing experience if no ACI certification is held.

• Construction inspection or construction materials testing (CMT) experience is preferred.

• Familiarity with standards such as AASHTO, ASTM, or ISO is preferred.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• ACI Field Testing Technician Grade 1 certification, preferred.

• ACI Strength Testing Technician certification, preferred.

• Aggregate Testing certification or experience, preferred.

• Experience with construction inspection or CMT work, preferred.

• Exposure to or understanding of AASHTO, ASTM, or ISO standards, preferred.

• Background or education in construction, civil engineering, geology, or environmental fields, including formal degrees or online coursework.

• Experience using or exposure to nuclear density gauges and concrete inspection tools, preferred.

• Strong interest in developing a long-term career in construction or geotechnical materials testing.

• Ability to work collaboratively with project managers, contractors, and clients in a professional manner.

Work Environment

This role is primarily field-based, with most time spent on active construction sites in and around Glendale, KY. The work involves exposure to typical construction conditions, including varying weather, uneven terrain, noise, dust, and heavy equipment in operation. The position also includes periodic work in a construction materials testing laboratory, which is a hands-on, dirty environment where concrete and soil samples are prepared and tested. The role requires routine lifting of 20 to 40 pounds and frequent movement of samples and equipment. Work is performed using field testing tools, laboratory equipment, and standard office software such as Microsoft Word and Excel. Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of New Albany, IN.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $23.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
