Today FPA is a group of primary care providers who are dedicated to giving family-centered care from birth to later years. FPA has over 20 primary providers including: physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and a licensed professional clinical counselor. With a professionally trained staff of CMA’s, receptionists, lab techs and others, FPA provides award winning care that has been recognized as a Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH) through the National Commission on Quality Assurance. FPA works diligently to offer Central Kentucky families enhanced access to medical care at its Hamburg & Brannon Crossing locations as well as online at . Responsibilities The Full-Time Laboratory Manager is responsible for the overall leadership, daily operations, quality, compliance, staffing, and performance of Family Practice Associates' laboratory services. This position provides strategic and operational leadership for the laboratory while ensuring accurate, timely, efficient, and patient-centered laboratory services. The Laboratory Manager serves as a CLIA defined technical consultant for the laboratory, establishes and maintains quality standards, determines and recommends the implementation of laboratory testing and instrumentation, evaluates staff competency, and ensures compliance with applicable regulatory and safety requirements. The Laboratory Manager also works collaboratively with FPA leadership, providers, managers, and staff to support organizational goals and continuously improve laboratory operations. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Laboratory Operations & Quality Direct, manage, and monitor the day-to-day operations and workflow of the laboratory. Develop, implement, and monitor laboratory processes to ensure accurate, efficient, and cost-effective testing. Direct, manage, and monitor the operation, maintenance, calibration, and service of laboratory instrumentation. Implement and maintain laboratory quality standards, quality assurance processes, proficiency testing, and regulatory compliance. Conduct laboratory quality assessments and develop, implement, and monitor corrective action plans for identified failures and as ongoing quality improvement goals. Evaluate and monitor laboratory test menu, instrumentation, assays, performance, and utilization. Monitor documentation and recordkeeping related to laboratory operations and quality standards per regulatory compliance and per FPA established policy and procedures. Maintain appropriate staff schedule to ensure there is an adequate number of competent staffing to support safe operations, efficient workflow, and accurate laboratory reporting within established turn around times. Demonstrate competency to provide support to laboratory staff with any laboratory function when necessary to maintain operations and patient service. Regulatory Compliance & Safety Maintain laboratory CLIA certification at each location. Oversee FPA’s OSHA Committee and coordinate workplace safety initiatives to support ongoing compliance with applicable OSHA requirements. Ensure compliance with applicable laboratory regulations, OSHA requirements, exposure control procedures, universal precautions, and other safety standards. Maintain a safe working environment for laboratory staff and patients. Develop and implement lab safety policies and procedures for the safe handling and proper disposal of hazardous and biohazardous materials within the laboratory. Ensure laboratory policies, procedures, and protocols remain current and support regulatory compliance and quality patient care. Leadership & Staff Development Lead, supervise, coach, and develop laboratory staff to achieve high standards of performance and patient service. Monitor and facilitate daily workflow and ensure appropriate staffing coverage throughout laboratory operations. Participate in recruiting, interviewing, selecting, and onboarding qualified laboratory staff. Coordinate orientation, training, and ongoing professional development for laboratory employees. Perform and document required employee competency assessments. Provide ongoing feedback regarding employee performance, expectations, and development opportunities. Conduct performance reviews and participate in performance counseling, retraining, work improvement plans, and disciplinary processes as appropriate. Conduct routine staff meetings, training sessions, and educational seminars. Serve as a knowledgeable and accessible resource to laboratory employees. Coordinate scheduling and assignment of laboratory staff to provide skill application for students completing phlebotomy externships Coordinate with HR and institutional representatives to facilitate student externships with current contracted programs Strategic & Financial Management Participate in strategic and operational planning for laboratory services. Prepare and manage the laboratory budget and monitor departmental resources. Identify opportunities to improve laboratory efficiency, quality, service, and cost effectiveness. Participate in organizational projects and initiatives that support FPA's strategic goals. Direct laboratory purchasing, procurement, and inventory control processes. Negotiate laboratory related contracts for services, instrumentation, supply, etc. Participate as an active member of FPA's management team. Support facility planning and maintenance initiatives related to laboratory operations. Maintain working knowledge of practice systems and technology utilized by the laboratory. Collaborate with providers, managers, administration, and other departments to support patient care and organizational objectives. Monitor operational needs and make appropriate staffing or workflow adjustments. Address laboratory-related patient, provider, and staff concerns promptly and professionally. Participate in the development and implementation of policies, procedures, and protocols designed to improve quality and patient care. Conduct and participate in staff meetings, department meetings, management meetings, and committees as assigned. Demonstrate professional leadership and serve as a positive role model when interacting with staff, providers, managers, and patients. Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned. Specific Requirements Bachelor's Degree in Medical Technology, Medical Laboratory Science, or Clinical Laboratory Science. ASCP certification required. Minimum of five (4) years of experience in a clinical laboratory. Experience with staff leadership, supervision, or management. Strong knowledge of laboratory operations, quality assurance, regulatory compliance, and laboratory safety standards, and staff management. Experience with electronic health records and laboratory information systems. Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to work effectively with patients, staff, providers, and organizational leadership. Demonstrated leadership, sound judgment, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. Ability to lead independently while collaborating effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team. Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize responsibilities, manage workflow, and work effectively in a high-volume environment. Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and other applicable computer programs. Fine motor skills necessary to operate computers and laboratory equipment. Ability to sit, stand, stretch, and move throughout the workday and lift loads of less than 10 pounds. Ability to work effectively under pressure and manage competing priorities in a busy primary care environment.
