Digital Producer / Medical Writer (New York City Metropolitan Area)
SurvivorNet
Digital Producer / Medical Writer
SurvivorNet, New York, primarily on-site
Base salary: $75,000–$120,000, plus performance bonus
SurvivorNet is a cancer information platform used by millions of people each month. We work with leading cancer centers, oncologists, and researchers, and our reporting is regularly picked up and cited by other major outlets.
We are hiring a Digital Producer / Medical Writer to write and produce content for patients and caregivers, and for the doctors who treat them. The work covers new research and treatment developments, explainers on specific cancers and therapies, and stories about people living with cancer. It runs across articles, video, expert interviews, condition pages, newsletters, and social.
Two things matter most in this role. First, you have to get the facts right and explain them clearly to both patients and physicians. Second, you have to be fully fluent in digital publishing, especially content management.
This is a competitive hire. We are looking for people who already do this work at a very high level and can demonstrate this.
Compensation
- Base salary of $75,000–$120,000, depending on experience.
- Significant performance-based bonuses tied to the quality, accuracy, and reach of your work.
- [Health, dental, and vision coverage; retirement plan; paid time off. Fill in actual benefits.]
What you’ll do
- Write accurate articles daily on cancer research, treatment, and patient experience, at a consistent pace and volume.
- Turn clinical studies, FDA decisions, conference data, and expert interviews into content for patients and, separately, for oncologists and other clinicians, adjusting depth and terminology for each.
- Publish quickly and cleanly, in our content management system. This includes building and updating pages, writing headlines and metadata for search, preparing images, and handling internal linking. Speed and precision in the CMS are core parts of the job.
- Use AI tools where they belong in the workflow: to speed up research, find and summarize sources, and handle image and photo work. You verify everything against primary sources before it publishes.
- Package stories across formats: pair articles with video, cut clips from expert interviews, and adapt content for newsletters and social.
- Use performance data to see what is working and adjust headlines, formats, and topics.
- Fact-check your work against primary sources and work with our medical reviewers to get the details right.
- Write and produce content for sponsored education programs, which go through client medical, legal, and regulatory review.
What we’re looking for
We will judge candidates on their track record. You should be able to show:
- Accuracy. Work that has held up to editing, fact-checking, or medical review, and a habit of going to primary sources.
- The ability to explain complex topics to two audiences. Published pieces that make difficult medical or scientific material clear to patients. Work written for physicians or other clinical readers is a strong plus.
- Digital fluency, especially in content management. You should be highly competent and fast in a CMS, able to build, format, optimize, and publish a page without help and without errors. You should also be able to write for search and mobile, use analytics to guide decisions, and produce or edit video and social content.
- Full proficiency with AI tools for publishing and research. You know how to use AI for image and photo work and for research, and you know where it should not be used. You understand its limits, check its output, and never let it introduce an error into published medical content.
- A record of delivering on deadline. Years of professional work in a newsroom, medical writing, or health content operation where you filed accurate copy quickly and consistently.
- Evidence of excellence. We want people who have done something at a very high level; at work. or in athletics, music, academics, research, a business, or a creative project. Tell us what it is and what you achieved.
A background in oncology or life sciences is a plus. You should be comfortable with high volume and tight deadlines on a small team, where you own your work from start to finish.
Location
This role is based at our headquarters in New York City. Some remote work is possible, but you should expect to spend most of your time in the office.
To apply
Applications without all four of the following will not be considered:
- Your resume.
- Three to five clips. Include at least one piece explaining complex medical or scientific information, and at least one showing digital production work, such as a multi-format package, a video, or content you published and optimized yourself. Note the turnaround time for any piece produced on a tight deadline.
- A short note on why you want to work at SurvivorNet specifically. Tell us what you have read on our site and what you would bring to it.
- A brief description of your excellence in any pursuit, professional or personal
