PURPOSE OF POSITION
The Machine and Fixture Design Engineer is responsible for developing, coordinating, and maintaining manufacturing tooling, fixtures, and equipment designs that improve safety, quality, productivity, and ergonomics across PPI manufacturing facilities. This role serves as the primary coordinator for fixture and tooling development by working with manufacturing, engineering, maintenance, and external design resources to transform manufacturing needs into standardized, documented, and sustainable solutions.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

More specifically, the employee owner will:
- Develop concepts for manufacturing fixtures, tooling, work-holding devices, lifting devices, gauges, and equipment improvements that enhance safety, quality, productivity, and ergonomics.
- Coordinate internal stakeholders and external design resources to develop, review, and implement tooling and fixture designs that meet manufacturing requirements.
- Facilitate cross-functional design reviews and project meetings with Manufacturing Engineering, Operations, Quality, Maintenance, and Engineering to ensure alignment and successful execution.
- Develop and maintain tooling and fixture standards, including CAD libraries, bills of material (BOMs), file structures, revision control, and design documentation.
- Coordinate prototype fabrication, testing, validation, implementation, and continuous improvement of tooling and fixture solutions.
- Support capital equipment and manufacturing improvement projects by developing tooling requirements, coordinating procurement, and assisting with implementation activities.
- Manage tooling and fixture project schedules, communicate project status, and coordinate activities to achieve project objectives and timelines.
- Train and support manufacturing personnel in the proper use, maintenance, and continuous improvement of tooling, fixtures, and related equipment.

- Mechanical aptitude and understanding of manufacturing processes.
- Knowledge of fixture design principles, manufacturing methods, and fabrication processes.
- Organizational, project coordination, and communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and coordinate cross-functional teams.
- Problem-solving and analytical skills.
- Ability to visualize mechanical assemblies and manufacturing workflows.
EDUCATION – EXPERIENCE – COMPUTER SKILLS
- Associate or Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Engineering Technology, Mechanical Design, Drafting, or related technical field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Three or more years of experience in mechanical design, tooling design, manufacturing engineering, or related manufacturing experience.
- Proficiency using SolidWorks or other 3D CAD software.
- Experience creating and maintaining engineering drawings and BOM structures.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and PPI business systems.
TRAINING – CERTIFICATIONS – LICENSES
- Continually participate in additional training related to the job.

- Technical Documentation & Standardization – Establishes and maintains organized tooling documentation, CAD files, bills of material (BOMs), revision control, and design standards to ensure consistency and long-term maintainability.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration – Builds effective partnerships with Manufacturing, Engineering, Maintenance, Quality, Purchasing, and external suppliers to develop and implement tooling and fixture solutions that meet operational needs.
- Continuous Improvement & Problem Solving – Identifies opportunities to improve manufacturing processes through effective tooling, fixture design, standardization, and practical solutions that enhance safety, quality, productivity, and ergonomics.

- Specific hearing abilities required for this job include the ability to hear equipment alarms and the ability to hear instructions from others.

ENVIRONMENTAL ADAPTABILITY
- The noise level in the work environment is usually loud when on the production floor and moderate when working in the office.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to work near moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles and outdoor weather conditions.
- Steel-toe safety shoes, safety glasses and hearing protection when in the production area.
