Job Summary

The Elementary Classroom Teacher is responsible for developing a flexible elementary grade program and a classroom environment that promotes learning and personal growth, establishing effective rapport with students, motivating students to develop required skills, attitudes, and knowledge, and fostering positive relationships with parents and other staff members.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description.

  1. Teaches reading, language arts, social studies, mathematics, science, art, health, physical education, and music to students utilizing the course of study adopted by the Board.
  2. Instructs pupils in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedure of the school district.
  3. Develops, evaluates, and translates lesson plans and instructional materials into individualized and small group learning experiences that adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student.
  4. Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom.
  5. Evaluates students' academic and social growth, maintains records, and prepares progress reports.
  6. Communicates with parents, counselors, and students through conferences and other means to discuss progress and interpret the school program.
  7. Identifies student needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping students solve health, attitude, and learning problems.
  8. Creates an effective environment for learning through functional and attractive displays, bulletin boards, and interest centers.
  9. Maintains professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the district and self-selected professional growth activities.
  10. Selects and requisitions books and instructional aids; maintains required inventory records; identifies and utilizes community instructional resources.
  11. Supervises pupils in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned workday.
  12. Participates in curriculum development programs and faculty committees and sponsors student activities.
  13. Plans and supervises purposeful assignments for educational assistants, student teachers, and volunteers.
  14. Enforces the Board's policy on equal educational opportunity and advises the Board on instructional policy and resource development necessary for meeting system-wide goals and objectives.
  15. Performs such other duties as may reasonably be prescribed by the principal.
  16. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Education and Experience

  • A bachelor's degree in elementary education or a related field and experience working with elementary students.

Required Licenses or Certifications

  • Valid Tennessee teaching certificate at appropriate grade level.

Knowledge of

  • Principles, theories, methods, techniques and strategies pertaining to teaching and instruction of elementary students
  • Child growth, development and behavior characteristics of elementary students
  • Educational curriculum and instructional goals and objectives
  • Educational trends and research findings pertaining to student educational programming

Skill in

  • Planning, organizing, developing, and conducting comprehensive teaching and instruction programs for elementary students
  • Providing effective learning experiences for students from a range of socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds with varying mental, social and emotional levels
  • Assessing and evaluating the educational needs of students
  • Oral and written communications

Ability to

  • Manage student conduct in the classroom and have a cool demeanor in a busy, highly adaptable atmosphere.
  • Understand and implement verbal and written instructions, rules, and procedures.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, teachers, and staff.
  • Utilize technology and operate computers and computer programs.

  • Ability to understand instructions and underlying principles; reason and make judgments; understand meanings of words and the ideas associated with them; perform arithmetic operations quickly and accurately; move the hands easily and manipulate small objects with the fingers; make visual comparisons and discriminations and see slight differences in shapes and shadings of figures; perceive or recognize similarities or differences in colors or shades or other values of the same color.
  • Low to medium degree of discomfort due to exposure to temperature, fumes, dirt, dust, noise, and cleaning chemicals.
  • This role works in a dynamic and engaging classroom environment designed to foster student learning, growth, and development. The classroom will be organized to support a range of instructional activities, with appropriate resources and materials available for hands-on learning.
  • This position manages a diverse group of students, guiding them through the academic curriculum while maintaining a positive and structured classroom atmosphere. The role involves adapting instructional methods to accommodate various learning styles and abilities, ensuring that each student has the opportunity to succeed. The teacher will maintain effective classroom management practices to create a respectful and collaborative environment that promotes student engagement and achievement.
  • The position also requires effective communication with parents and colleagues to support the holistic development of students and ensure alignment with school goals. Collaboration with other staff members and participation in school-wide initiatives will be essential to ensure a cohesive educational experience for all students.
  • Regular assessment of student progress and the implementation of individualized support plans will be key components of the teacher's responsibilities. The teacher will be responsible for creating a safe, inclusive, and nurturing learning space that encourages exploration and academic curiosity.
