Public Health Nurse Level I/II

Job Overview Public Health Nurse – Level I and Level II standard, routine nursing duties as defined in California state regulations. The position is a continuous filing exam with multiple cut‑off dates. Compensated by a monthly range per level: Level I: $9,255.06 – $11,249.08; Level II: $9,693.50 – $11,783.28. Key Duties The focus is on providing standard public health nursing services to individuals and families in homes, group settings, specialized clinics and public health centers, or supporting a public health program aimed at a specific client group. Incumbents may be designated as nurse‑in‑charge or nurse‑of‑the‑day for specific shifts or special‑purpose clinics and may give work direction to other employees. Knowledge Required Professional public health nursing principles, procedures and techniques. State of California laws and regulations on nursing practices. Normal course of illnesses and disabilities, and their treatment. Family planning methods, pre‑natal, pregnancy and post‑natal nutrition and medical care. Infant and child care, growth, development and common illnesses. Case management techniques for high risk, physically impaired and developmentally disabled infants and children. Substance abuse symptoms and intervention techniques. Mental illness symptoms and intervention techniques. Child and adult abuse and neglect prevention, reporting and treatment. Family dynamics, social and economic factors influencing health. Differing cultural, religious and social attitudes regarding hygiene, family planning, child care and health treatment. Handling and administering biological and contaminated items. Control, detection, prevention and treatment of communicable, environmental, sexually transmitted and food‑borne illnesses. Basic procedures for epidemiologic investigations. Standard medical record keeping. Abilities Effectively communicate and gain cooperation of clients from diverse backgrounds. Cooperate with other health and social service providers. Conduct patient and family interviews for medical evaluation. Implement interventions for mental illness and substance abuse. Participate in in‑service education and training. Demonstrate and teach care of infants, children, disabled and chronically ill patients. Teach public group classes. Encourage cooperation in disease and environmental health investigations. Tolerate unsanitary environments. Maintain compliance with laws, rules and protocols, including security requirements. Avoid or defuse potentially dangerous situations. Accurately evaluate cases to determine caseload priorities. Plan routes and schedules for in‑home visits efficiently. Operate slide and movie projectors, use teaching aids. Maintain patient confidentiality. Minimum Qualifications Level I – registration and licensure requirements as outlined by the California Board of Registered Nursing. Level II – at least six months of experience as a licensed/certified Public Health Nurse performing public health nursing duties. General Qualifications Current Registered Nurse license and public health nurse specialty certificate issued by the state of California. Current California driver’s license, class III or higher; failure to maintain may result in disciplinary action. Valid CPR certificate. May require language proficiency in a language other than English for certain positions. Probationary period of six months.
