Position Specific Description: The Wind Field Service Technician Major Component is a highly skilled, fleet-wide traveling role responsible for executing large corrective maintenance and major component replacements on wind turbine generators. This position plays a critical role in restoring turbine availability through complex mechanical and electrical work performed at heights exceeding 300 feet. The role requires strong technical aptitude, precision, and the ability to perform safely and effectively in fast-paced, high-pressure environments driven by weather and wind-window constraints. Technicians in this role regularly support crane operations for major component replacements and must demonstrate a strong understanding of rigging practices, load control, and clear communication to safely direct crane movements during removal and installation of large turbine components. Weekend, night, and extended-hour work is required, along with extensive travel across the company fleet, often with little or no advance notice.
Key Responsibilities: Under general supervision, the Wind Field Service Technician Major Component will:
- Travel extensively across the entire company fleet, often with minimal advance notice
- Perform large corrective maintenance and major component replacements on wind turbine generators, including but not limited to gearboxes, generators, main bearings, blades, and other major assemblies
- Execute precision mechanical work such as component replacement, torquing, alignment, and critical fastener verification
- Perform advanced electrical and mechanical troubleshooting on wind turbine systems
- Work safely at heights of 300+ feet while adhering to all fall protection and rescue requirements
- Apply rigging principles to support safe lifting operations and assist in directing crane movements during component removal and installation
- Operate effectively in high-stress, time-sensitive environments driven by wind conditions, crane schedules, and outage windows
- Maintain, inspect, and properly use all company-supplied tools, equipment, vehicles, and facilities
- Apply a solid understanding of technical procedures, work instructions, and Quality Improvement (QI) processes
- Provide safety oversight to other personnel and serve as a safety mentor when required
- Promote and enforce a strong safety culture, including stop-work authority when conditions are unsafe
- Meet all attendance, travel, and availability requirements
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned
Required Skills & Qualifications: Strong mechanical and electrical aptitude with demonstrated experience in industrial or heavy equipment maintenance. Proven experience performing complex maintenance or repairs in challenging environments. Working knowledge of rigging practices, load dynamics, and hand signals or radio communication for crane operations. Ability to safely work at extreme heights (300+ feet) and in varying weather conditions. Ability to remain calm, focused, and effective in stressful, fast-paced situations with tight time constraints. Strong communication skills and the ability to coordinate effectively with crane operators, supervisors, and team members. Willingness and ability to travel extensively on a fleet-wide basis. Availability for weekend, night, and extended-hour work as required. Ability to meet all physical demands of the role, including climbing, lifting, and working in confined spaces.
Preferred Qualifications: Previous experience with major component replacements on wind turbines. Crane and heavy lift support experience in wind, industrial, or construction environments. Formal training or certification in rigging, lifting operations, or technical wind systems. Experience serving in a safety leadership or mentoring role.
Working Conditions: Frequent work at heights exceeding 300 feet. Outdoor work in varied and sometimes extreme weather conditions. High travel percentage with variable schedules. Physically demanding work in industrial environments.
