Accountant

Nature of Work This is responsible accounting and administrative work assisting with various financial and administrative related activities for the City of Pigeon Forge. Activities associated with the position include completing accurate reconciliations, reviewing general ledger to ensure accurate postings, preparing and posting journal entries to adjust or correct, assist in preparing and maintaining minutes, and assists public with requests. Job responsibilities require a strong accounting background, unquestionable integrity, strong interpersonal, organizational and decision-making skills and attention to detail. Job performance is evaluated by the Finance Director through review of the accuracy and thoroughness of all financial transactions, ability to consistently meet deadlines and reporting requirements, and initiatives, and interpersonal, organizational and decision-making skills. Job activities are also subject to state and independent audits. Illustrative Examples of Work Reviews all checking accounts and reconciles them to the general ledger by creating and posting journal entries on a monthly basis.Reviews bank statements and the general ledger and prepare and/or posts closing journal entries to the general ledger on a monthly basis including interest on checking and CD accounts, garage and utility inventory adjustments, voided checks, water and sewer labor and materials, etc.Reconciles general ledger accounts and creates required journal entries to adjust or correct.Makes correcting journal entries for accounts receivable errors on daily cash reports and deposits made into the wrong fund or account.Researches unreconciled checks to reissue or void and sends unclaimed property to the State.Creates and updates vendors and maintains total project costs, engineering and construction costs and Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) amounts.Reviews general ledger to ensure accurate postings; researches issues arising from general ledger review.Performs a variety of financial tasks, which may include posting financial data, balancing accounts, tracking fund activity, and maintaining financial ledgers.Prepares and maintains minutes for governing body and related meetings.Assists the Finance Director with public records request and help prepare the documents.Attends and participates in city commission meetings and workshops as needed.Prepares minutes for various city board meetings.Enters the approved budget on the general ledger and creates the Budget Summary Report for submission to the State.Performs administrative duties assist the Finance Director in preparation of the annual budgets.Assists external auditors as needed.Maintains and balances retainage accounts for city projects.Reviews invoices for proper coding prior to payment.Prepares and mails annual 1099 forms to vendors, and uploads electronic file to IRS.Assists internal and external customers with questions pertaining to finance.Assists in special projects as designated by the City Manager, Finance Director and/or Assistant Finance Director.Works Closely with all accounting staff and management.Serves as back-up for various accounting staff.Performs related duties as required.
