Wage and Hour Inspector - Presque Isle

The Maine Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division is looking for Wage and Hour Inspectors to enforce state labor laws related to child labor, minimum wage, overtime, rest breaks, payroll records, and other workplace standards. Salary: $49,275.20 - $69,139.20 annually. Primary Responsibilities Educate employers and workers about Maine’s labor laws and requirements in the community. Conduct workplace inspections under the Strategic Enforcement Initiative, focusing on industries where violations are most common. Provide information and resources to help workers and employers resolve problems. Engage in conflict resolution to address complaints involving final pay, pay stubs, breaks, and similar issues. Investigate systemic or pervasive violations by interviewing people, auditing records, and collecting evidence. Use technology to support investigative work in innovative ways. Collaborate with local communities, state agencies, and the U.S. Department of Labor. Contribute new ideas to continually improve labor standards enforcement. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Communication : Interview diverse individuals, give information one‑on‑one and in groups, testify in hearings, and write clearly in emails, letters, and reports. Conflict Resolution : De‑escalate disputes and resolve worker complaints in a neutral, professional, and solution‑oriented manner. Critical Thinking : Assess facts objectively, evaluate evidence, draw conclusions, and make sound recommendations. Collaboration : Build and maintain effective relationships with community and government partners. Computer Skills : Proficient in Microsoft Office, Excel, Outlook, Word, and electronic case‑management systems; perform accurate calculations using Excel. Coordination : Manage dynamic caseloads and multiple deadlines independently and collaboratively, organizing work to meet demands. Minimum Qualifications A combination of education, training, and/or experience in Business/Public Administration, Social Sciences, or a related field. Demonstrated experience with extensive public contact, public speaking, complaint investigation/resolution, mediation, or a directly related area. Preferred Qualifications Experience interviewing people in diverse contexts (e.g., journalism, human resources, insurance claims, law enforcement). Experience auditing or reviewing financial, time‑keeping, or other technical records. Experience providing customer service to the public. Curiosity and analytical mindset to approach inspections objectively. Eagerness to learn and share new ideas and information that support continuous improvement.
