Director, Nursing Services - Emergency Department

The Director of Nursing Services is responsible for overseeing clinical activities within a unit or area. Manages key department programs and initiatives for that area. Serves as the direct link between Wayne UNC Health Care leadership and the patient care team. Achieves superior clinical and financial outcomes with a focus on patient, provider and teammate satisfaction. Collaborates with others to achieve the Hospital's strategic mission and objectives.

Responsibilities include establishing departmental goals and priorities which align with the hospital's strategic direction, directing and overseeing daily activities and operations of an efficient, coordinated, competent, compassionate and customer focused care team, supporting the SVP/Chief Nursing Officer in the development and promulgation of professional standards of nursing practice for the hospital, developing, maintaining and evaluating systems that support the nursing process and the delivery of safe and effective patient care, collaborating with providers, leaders and teammates hospital-wide to develop, implement and evaluate care processes and procedures pertinent to the patient populations served, serving as a subject matter expert or using other subject matter experts to provide safe patient care, leading efforts to develop and implement evidence-based clinical practice into daily practice, coordinating requirements for ongoing and new patient care programs, ensuring compliance with all regulatory agencies and accrediting bodies, enhancing others understanding of nursing and patient care standards and regulations as integral to and supportive of professional practice, participating in evaluating, selecting and integrating health care technology and information management systems that support patient care needs and the efficient use of resources, developing and monitoring budgets and expenses, evaluating staffing patterns, patient discharge and/or volume targets, responsible for the professional development of teammates, keeping up to date on trends and developments in area of practice, researching, developing and implementing new protocols and procedures, making decisions on teammate hires, corrective actions, terminations, promotions and similar actions, sharing in 24-hour responsibility for the unit, keeping appropriate leaders updated regarding any issues, concerns or problems, promoting a safe, clean environment, actively leading or participating in staff meetings and on committees, leading and/or participating in performance improvement activities, remaining calm and working effectively in stressful situations, responding appropriately in emergency situations, presenting and promoting a professional demeanor at all times, establishing high standards of customer service, supporting responsibility, pride, and teamwork, and offering reasonable solutions for problems, demonstrating appropriate interaction with, and providing recommended care and services to all patients, ensuring the delivery of age appropriate, culturally sensitive, and ethical care for patients, and applying knowledge of principles of standard precautions.

Education: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university required. Licensure/Certification: Current Registered Nurse licensure in North Carolina. BLS certification required. Additional certifications may be required for a specific area of practice. Experience: At least five years of progressive nursing experience including two years of management or leadership experience preferred. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: In depth knowledge of nursing practices relevant to area of specialty. In depth knowledge of relevant regulations and legislation. Solid decision making and critical thinking skills. Proven leadership qualities, e.g., maturity, job knowledge, professionalism, communication skills, etc. to lead, guide and motivate others. Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills. Ability to read, write and communicate effectively in English. Proficient with EMR and able to learn new software rapidly. Ability to stand, walk and meet the physical requirements of the role.
