Job Title: Phlebotomist II Job Description This Phlebotomist II role focuses on delivering high-quality, patient-centered specimen collection and processing in a fast-paced laboratory environment. You greet patients, perform blood draws and other specimen collections, and ensure accurate labeling, handling, and storage of samples in accordance with established procedures and regulatory standards. You support the laboratory team by maintaining equipment, updating patient information, and providing clear communication and excellent customer service to patients and clinical staff. Responsibilities Greet patients as they arrive at the laboratory and provide a courteous, professional experience throughout their visit. Clearly and calmly explain the venipuncture and specimen collection process, including blood, urine and fecal samples, to help patients feel comfortable and informed. Perform blood draws using straight needles, butterfly needles, syringes and other appropriate techniques, following all safety and quality protocols. Collect and store specimens according to established procedures, ensuring proper temperature control and use of appropriate collection containers and tubes. Match laboratory requisition forms or computer-generated labels to specimen tubes, verifying that all information is 100% accurate. Label, centrifuge, split and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders and protocols to maintain specimen integrity. Package specimens for transport, following detailed procedures and protocols to ensure safe and compliant handling. Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks to support a clean, safe and compliant laboratory environment. Update patient information accurately in laboratory systems and related records. Understand and fully interpret physicians’ orders to ensure the correct tests are performed on collected specimens. Check all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to confirm accuracy before processing. Answer telephone calls professionally and read laboratory results when appropriate to satisfy inquiries in accordance with lab policies. Prepare collection sites for venipuncture and other specimen collection, ensuring proper aseptic technique and patient safety. Handle insurance and billing-related tasks associated with specimen collection and processing, following established procedures. Process samples efficiently and accurately, adhering to all laboratory guidelines and turnaround time expectations. Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and attend annual department trainings to stay current with safety and regulatory requirements. Provide excellent customer service to patients, demonstrating empathy, patience and a patient-first mindset. Collaborate effectively with laboratory and clinical staff, taking initiative and contributing to a positive team environment. Essential Skills At least 1 year of phlebotomy and venipuncture experience in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting. Proficiency in blood drawing techniques, including venipuncture using straight needles, butterfly needles, syringes and collection for blood cultures. Experience with specimen collection and processing, including blood, urine and fecal samples. Strong laboratory skills in labeling, centrifuging, splitting, freezing and storing specimens according to established protocols. Ability to accurately match laboratory requisition forms or computer labels to specimen tubes and verify all information. Previous customer service experience in any setting, with the ability to provide courteous and professional patient interactions. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for basic data entry, documentation and communication tasks. Understanding of and compliance with OSHA and DEP regulations and laboratory safety standards. High School Diploma or GED. Demonstrated reliability and positive attendance history in prior roles. Ability to take feedback constructively and show eagerness to learn and improve. Strong teamwork skills, working well with others in a collaborative environment. Positive, hardworking attitude with a willingness to take initiative. Patient-first mindset with a focus on quality, accuracy and compassionate care. Additional Skills & Qualifications Comfort working in a high-volume, fast-paced lab or hospital environment. Strong attention to detail and accuracy in specimen labeling, documentation and data entry. Effective verbal communication skills to explain procedures clearly and answer patient and staff inquiries. Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously, such as greeting patients, performing collections and updating records. Commitment to ongoing training and adherence to annual department education requirements. Strong problem‑solving skills and sound judgment when interpreting physicians’ orders and handling specimens. Professional demeanor and interpersonal skills that contribute to a positive, supportive workplace culture. Work Environment This role is based in a clinical laboratory setting in Portland, Oregon, operating Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. You work in a fast-paced environment where you interact directly with patients, clinical staff and fellow laboratory professionals throughout the day. The work involves frequent use of phlebotomy equipment, including straight needles, butterfly needles, syringes, collection tubes and centrifuges, as well as computer systems for requisitions, labeling and data entry. Specimens are handled and stored under specific temperature and safety conditions, and you follow detailed protocols to maintain sample integrity and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.
