Pressure Control Technician

Job Title

This position performs technical duties for the department's pressure control management functions. This position is on call 24/7.

Examples of Duties

Essential duties include:

  • Installs, repairs, and maintenance of the city's pressure control systems.
  • Assists with maintaining internal program compliance.
  • Performs daily work assignments in the pressure control area.
  • Performs technical maintenance tasks.
  • Troubleshoots and repairs system malfunctions.
  • Performs administrative field duties.
  • Assists with managing system pressure control records.
  • Assists with ensuring compliance with Department of Transportation regulations.
  • Conducts odorization tests.
  • Locates and repairs gas leaks.
  • Identifies corrective and preventative actions to maintain adequate pressure control of the city's gas distribution system.
  • Performs related duties.

Typical Qualifications

Knowledge, skills, and abilities required by the position include:

  • Knowledge of the installation, maintenance, and repair of natural gas distribution systems.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local safety rules and regulations.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices related to the handling of natural gas emergencies.
  • Knowledge of regulators.
  • Knowledge of relevant federal and state laws, city codes, and department policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of computers and job-related software programs.
  • Skills in the operation of special equipment, including a backhoe, jackhammer, air compressor, tractor, and fusion machines.
  • Skills in problem solving.
  • Skills in prioritizing and planning.
  • Skills in interpersonal relations.
  • Skills in oral and written communication.

Supplemental Information

Supervisory controls include very general instructions with spot-checks for compliance. Guidelines include state and federal regulations, natural gas codes, and city policies. The work consists of varied technical and administrative duties, with diagnosing failures in complicated systems contributing to its complexity. Contacts are typically with co-workers, engineers, contractors, vendors, developers, state inspectors, and members of the general public.

Physical demands include sitting, standing, stooping, walking, bending, or crouching, lifting light and heavy objects, using tools or equipment requiring dexterity, distinguishing between shades of color, and utilizing the sense of smell. The work is typically performed in an office, stockroom, warehouse, or outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee is exposed to dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, and irritating chemicals. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.

Supervisory and management responsibility is none.

Minimum Qualifications include:

  • High school education.
  • Three to five years' experience or service.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
