Experienced P&C Field Services Technician

Job Description WSP is hiring a POWER Testing and Energization (PTE) Experienced P&C Field Services Technician for project locations in Maine, New York, Virginia, North Carolina, and Florida. The role involves electrical testing and commissioning of utility substations, industrial, and bulk electrical power systems. Responsibilities Supports a wide range of testing and commissioning activities applying client and industry standards (IEEE, NETA, NFPA, NESC). Works under limited supervision, executing moderately complex assignments and ensuring regulatory compliance, safety adherence, and data integrity. Provides day‑to‑day support to field teams, resolves on‑site challenges, and mentors junior technicians. Performs assigned testing and commissioning tasks for Protection and Control systems on high‑voltage substations. Conducts hands‑on protective relay testing with equipment such as Omicron CMC 256/356 or Doble F6150. Uses field forms, digital data tools, and mobile applications to document site activities. Handles equipment cleaning, inventory control, and calibration as directed. Supports the Project Lead or Field Supervisor on projects and escalates complex technical problems to the site lead or project manager. Participates in daily safety briefings and ensures compliance with health and safety protocols. Communicates progress, observations, and potential delays to the project team. Reviews the work of less experienced technicians for quality and accuracy, providing informal guidance as needed. Maintains attention to detail when filling logs, photo documentation, and label entries. Collaborates with other technicians to maintain workflow, safety, and quality standards. Assists in monitoring subcontractor performance and reports observations to field leadership. Completes clerical responsibilities such as timecards, expense reports, and project reports. Adheres to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies, exercising responsible and ethical decision‑making. Performs additional responsibilities as required by business needs. Requirements High school diploma or equivalent. Minimum of 7 years of experience in the electrical testing industry, including medium and high‑voltage circuit breakers, power transformers, instrument transformers, and substation protection and controls testing. Demonstrable expertise on transmission, generation, and distribution relays and protective schemes. Technical skills in relay calibration using Omicron CMC 256/356 and Doble F6150, control scheme testing, CT/PT circuit testing, settings upload to microprocessor relays, and static & dynamic testing of microprocessor‑based protective relays. Proven experience with electrical field testing standards such as NETA, IEEE, and NFPA. Knowledge of testing electrical distribution, generation, and transmission projects ranging from 15 kV to 500 kV. Experience using protective testing software (ProTesT, Protection Suite, ENOSERV RTS, Omicron Test Universe, AcSELerator Quickset) and reading electrical drawings. Ability to identify routine field challenges, respond within established procedures, and elevate atypical conditions. Skilled in preparing field logs, sketches, and digital reports. Physical stamina for outdoor and demanding conditions; must lift up to 35 lbs individually and 100 lbs with assistance. Valid driver’s license and clean driving record. Willingness to travel up to 80% of the time. Ability to work independently or in a team, follow procedures, meet deadlines, and maintain accountability. Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and adhering to WSP’s health, safety, drug/alcohol, and harassment policies. The selected candidate must be authorized to work in the United States. Preferred Qualifications Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline. Experience testing and troubleshooting electromechanical relays. Experience testing and commissioning high‑voltage substation equipment such as CTs, CCVTs, PLC systems, DC systems, batteries, and battery chargers. Current OSHA 30‑hour or 40‑hour HAZWOPER certification.
