Child Life Specialist

Job Description Harborview Medical Center – Rehab Therapies has an outstanding opportunity for a Child Life Specialist. Under general supervision from the nursing team, the specialist works with patients, families, and a multidisciplinary team to facilitate age‑appropriate interactions, increase effective patient/family coping, and promote optimal development of hospitalized children. The role includes assessment, treatment program planning and implementation, patient and family education, and consultative support to staff in the ED and outpatient clinics. Work Schedule Part‑Time / 28 hours per week Day Shift Department Description UW Medicine Rehabilitation – A multidisciplinary team centered around compassion and innovation. The department is recognized by U.S. News & World Report as one of the top rehabilitation programs in the nation. Primary Job Responsibilities Demonstrate working knowledge of disease processes, precautions, typical medical treatments and diagnostic procedures, functional abilities, complications, and implications of long‑term deficits related to primary diagnoses. Demonstrate advanced knowledge of developmental stages and their effects on hospitalizations and the evaluation and assessment of patients ages 0–18 years (including adults with developmental delays). Create care plans based on admitting diagnosis, medical issues impacting stay, developmental stage, temperament, coping style, culture, spirituality, potential stressors, patient and family needs, and social supports. Provide a goal‑directed treatment program to meet psychosocial and developmental needs. Serve as a resource to other disciplines, attend patient care rounds, document interventions, communicate with the care team, participate in department activities/projects, provide education and training to staff, monitor supplies, maintain professional growth, assist with volunteer training, orient or supervise students, and prioritize caseload under general direction. Requirements Bachelor’s degree and certification as a Child Life Specialist. Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements such as a license, certification, or registration.
