Job Description: Long-Term Care Smoking AidePosition Summary

The Smoking Aide is responsible for ensuring the safe, orderly, and supervised smoking of residents in accordance with facility policies, physician orders, and state and federal regulations. This position provides scheduled supervision of designated smoking residents while maintaining a safe environment and supporting resident dignity and independence. During periods when smoking supervision is not required, the Smoking Aide assists nursing staff with non-clinical resident support and other assigned duties.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Supervise residents during scheduled smoking times as outlined by facility policy.

• Escort residents to and from the designated smoking area as needed.

• Verify that only residents approved for supervised smoking participate.

• Ensure all smoking materials are handled safely and stored according to facility procedures.

• Monitor residents throughout the smoking period to prevent unsafe behaviors or fire hazards.

• Enforce facility smoking rules and immediately report any unsafe conditions or policy violations.

• Maintain a clean, safe, and organized smoking area.

• Document smoking attendance or other required information as directed by facility policy.

• Communicate resident concerns, changes in condition, or incidents to the nursing staff promptly.

• Assist with resident comfort needs during non-smoking periods, including transporting residents, passing water, stocking supplies, and other non-clinical duties as assigned.

• Follow all infection control, fire safety, emergency preparedness, and resident rights policies.

• Maintain resident confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA regulations.

Schedule

• 12-hour shift: 8:00 AM – 8:00 PM

• One (1) unpaid 1-hour meal break.

• Smoking supervision is provided during scheduled smoking times established by the facility. The employee must remain available and punctual for all assigned smoking periods.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED preferred.

• Previous experience in long-term care, assisted living, or healthcare is preferred but not required.

• Ability to communicate effectively with residents, families, and staff.

• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.

• Dependable, patient, and attentive to resident safety.

• Must successfully complete any required facility orientation and training.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.

• Ability to push wheelchairs and assist with resident transport.

• Ability to lift up to 25 pounds and perform frequent bending, reaching, and stooping.

• Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions during scheduled smoking times.

Working Conditions

The employee works primarily in a long-term care environment with routine exposure to outdoor weather conditions and secondhand smoke while supervising resident smoking. Appropriate safety procedures and facility policies must be followed at all times.

Reporting Relationship

Reports to the Charge Nurse, Unit Manager, or other designated supervisor.
