Job Title: Phlebotomist II Job Description
The Phlebotomist II plays a key role in supporting laboratory operations by performing blood draws and other specimen collections, troubleshooting issues, assisting with training, and recommending workflow improvements. This position works in a fast-paced hospital environment, interacting directly with patients and clinical staff to ensure accurate, timely, and safe collection and handling of specimens.
Responsibilities
This role is based in a hospital setting, working primarily in the laboratory and regularly traveling to patient rooms to perform blood draws. The position focuses on adult and geriatric patients, with no pediatric responsibilities. The environment is fast paced, especially during morning shifts when the phlebotomist may draw blood for approximately 35 to 40 patients. Typical schedules include weekday shifts such as 4:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. or 5:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, with rotating coverage every third weekend and holiday work as part of the team schedule. The work involves regular use of phlebotomy equipment, specimen collection supplies, and laboratory instruments such as centrifuges, along with computer systems and Microsoft Office for documentation and communication. Staff follow established safety protocols and regulatory requirements to maintain a clean, compliant, and professional clinical environment.

The Phlebotomist II plays a key role in supporting laboratory operations by performing blood draws and other specimen collections, troubleshooting issues, assisting with training, and recommending workflow improvements. Responsibilities
- Perform venipuncture and blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles with a high degree of accuracy and care.
- Collect and store blood, urine, fecal, and other specimens according to established procedures and test requirements.
- Clearly and courteously explain the venipuncture and specimen collection process to patients to ensure understanding and comfort.
- Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure 100% accuracy.
- Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders and protocols.
- Package specimens for transport and store samples at the required temperature in appropriate collection containers or tubes to maintain specimen integrity.
- Follow all procedures and protocols for specimen handling, transport, and documentation to ensure compliance with regulatory and laboratory standards.
- Understand and fully interpret physicians' orders related to laboratory testing and specimen collection.
- Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks as required to support a safe and efficient laboratory environment.
- Update patient information and ensure accurate data entry in laboratory and hospital systems.
- Answer telephone calls, provide laboratory results as appropriate, and respond to inquiries in a professional and customer-focused manner.
- Attend annual department trainings and remain current with OSHA and DEP regulations and other applicable safety and compliance requirements.
- Collaborate with laboratory and clinical team members to support efficient workflow and high-quality patient care.
- Travel between the laboratory and patient rooms within the hospital to perform blood draws, primarily for adult and geriatric patients.
- Contribute to a high-volume morning workflow, including drawing blood for approximately 35 to 40 patients during busy shifts.
- Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, if required by local regulations.
- Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.
- 2 to 4 years of overall experience in a healthcare or laboratory environment.
- Proven proficiency in phlebotomy, venipuncture, and specimen collection procedures.
- Demonstrated experience with blood draws for adult and geriatric patients.
- Ability to accurately label, centrifuge, split, freeze, and store specimens according to test orders and protocols.
- Strong attention to detail to ensure 100% accuracy when matching requisition forms, scripts, and specimen labels.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for basic documentation and communication tasks.
- Knowledge of and ability to comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and other safety standards.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Experience working in a hospital laboratory setting and traveling to patient rooms for specimen collection.
- Strong customer service skills and the ability to communicate clearly and courteously with patients and clinical staff.
- Comfort working with adult and geriatric populations in inpatient settings.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a collaborative team in a fast-paced environment.
