Overview Tompkins Cortland Community College is located in the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York. Position: Campus Environmental Health & Safety Officer Location: Dryden, NY Job Id: 264 # of Openings: 1 Location & Hours Location: Main Campus Hours: Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. – 4 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday — Closed Responsibilities Manage and perform routine inspections of College premises and affiliated properties to detect safety hazards and complete required life-safety inspections of equipment such as AEDs, sprinklers, fire alarms, and fire extinguishers. Identify, label, and ensure proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) for each College position requesting it. Ensure hazardous materials are inventoried, labeled, safely disposed of, and properly stored. Respond to chemical emergencies, including spill response, and interface with local fire departments when appropriate. Conduct safety training for the College community (e.g., Right-to-Know, Lockout/Tagout, Bloodborne Pathogens, Chemical Hygiene, Confined Space Entry, Rabies Protection, Hazardous Materials Response). Oversee the College’s Chemical Hygiene program. Coordinate with state and federal regulatory agencies and local health and safety organizations as directed by the Director of Facilities. Assist the Director of Facilities with budget proposals and bids for maintenance and testing of life-safety systems; maintain inspection records. Coordinate and direct testing of fire alarm systems for the College and affiliated properties as required by NYS Code. Review and cite sections of NY State, national, and local codes relevant to duties. Lead efforts as a member of the College Health and Safety Committee. Assist in investigations of accidents or injuries and in enforcement of campus facility safety rules as needed. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Personal Characteristics Thorough knowledge of Federal and State OSHA rules and regulations as they pertain to safety practices. Working knowledge of office terminology, procedures, and equipment; familiarity with college facilities layout. Ability to conduct and facilitate individual and group safety training; clear oral and written communication skills. Ability to provide guidance on safety issues and to make independent decisions regarding employee safety. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships; good judgment and problem-solving skills. Ability to interpret and follow oral and written directions; courteous and tactful interaction with the public while enforcing safety requirements. Good powers of observation; physical condition commensurate with job demands. Special and Qualification Details MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: (a) A total of 60 college credits with emphasis in Environmental Health and Safety, Biology, Chemistry, Occupational Safety or related areas AND three years of safety-related work experience; OR (b) High school diploma and five years’ experience in Environmental Health and Safety or related field; OR (c) Any combination of training and experience equivalent to (a) or (b). SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Certification for RCRA hazardous material handling and disposal within 1 year of appointment and ongoing certification for the term of employment. Distinguishing Features & Typical Work Activities The Officer is responsible for the overall safety program across the College and affiliated properties, developing and coordinating safety standards and training to ensure compliance with safety programs. Provides advice on accident prevention and occupational health concerns to management and staff; identifies safety vulnerability and recommends preventive measures. May assist Campus Police as requested; reports to the Director of Facilities. May assist with budget planning and maintenance/testing services for life-safety systems; maintains inspection records.
