The City of Marion is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Sanitation Technician in the Public Works Sanitation Division. This is an entry-level opportunity to become part of a skilled team of professionals dedicated to the safe collection of waste and debris. Job Summary This position operates a variety of equipment and/or trucks in places requiring a high level of skill. Work involves operating a variety of tools, trucks and equipment and using a variety of trade skills to collect and dispose of business, commercial, and residential solid waste and yard debris. Employees may operate a pickup truck to collect residential waste on assigned routes. Employees may work independently or as a member of a crew. Work is performed in accordance with general and/or explicit instructions and within defined procedures. Employees perform work in accordance with OSHA and City safety rules and regulations and motor vehicle laws.Employees are subject to the hazards associated with operating heavy equipment including working in both inside and outside environments, in extreme hot and cold weather, and exposure to various hazards such as loud noises, vibration, moving mechanical parts, pinch points, chemicals, fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, poor ventilation and oils. Employees may be subject to the OSHA standards on bloodborne pathogens. Work is performed under regular supervision in conformance with established standards and is evaluated for productivity, efficiency, quality, safety, and adherence to established standards. General Description of Duties Duties include, but are not limited to: Drives a pickup truck to each house on each assigned route and empties trash cans into the back of the truck; after truck is filled, packs the trash. Drives recycle truck and collects residential recyclables; transports collected recyclables to appropriate recycle pad at county Public Works. Drives a brush truck; collects and disposes of yard waste. Picks up street trash consisting of large items such as furniture and other household items; uses lift to assist in loading heavy items; hauls street trash to the transfer station. Follows relevant safety practices and procedures in equipment operation. Checks vehicles and equipment daily to ensure safe operation; reports unsafe conditions and equipment problems to the supervisor. Performs routine cleaning and maintenance of motorized equipment and vehicles; cleans salt/sand trucks to prevent rusting; cleans and sanitizes garbage truck regularly. During extreme weather conditions such as snow and ice, the employee may manually shovel snow and spread ice melt to clean sidewalks and other assigned areas. Performs related duties as required or requested. Recruitment and Selection Guidelines Interested candidates will be assessed on the following knowledge, skills and abilities: Considerable knowledge of the street system of the City. Considerable knowledge of how to operate and maintain the trucks and equipment used in sanitation work. Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards involved with sanitation work and the ability to work safely while performing assigned duties. Considerable knowledge of North Carolina traffic laws. Ability to safely and efficiently perform manual labor that involves a considerable amount of bending and lifting. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions and to make records of work activity. Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with coworkers, other employees, supervisors, and the general public. Ability to respond courteously to citizens and to provide excellent customer service. Ability to learn prescribed collection routes and to travel the routes while collecting garbage, brush, or recyclables efficiently and safely. Minimal Requirement Possession of a valid North Carolina driver’s license. Preferred Education and Experience Graduation from high school and some experience in the operation of the vehicles and equipment used in sanitation work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
