EJI was founded in 1989 by Bryan Stevenson, a public interest lawyer and bestselling author of Just Mercy, and provides legal representation to people who have been illegally convicted, unfairly sentenced, or abused in state jails and prisons. We challenge the death penalty and excessive punishment and we provide re-entry assistance to formerly incarcerated people. Additionally, EJI works with communities that have been marginalized by poverty and discouraged by unequal treatment. We have launched programs aimed at reducing poverty in America, including an Anti-Hunger Program that has served thousands of families struggling with food insecurity and a health clinic that provides free care to vulnerable people. EJI produces groundbreaking reports, an award-winning calendar, and short films that explore our nation’s history of racial injustice. EJI operates the Legacy Sites—the Legacy Museum, National Memorial for Peace and Justice, and Freedom Monument Sculpture Park as part of our national effort to create new spaces, markers, and memorials that address the legacy of slavery, lynching, and racial segregation that shapes many issues today. EJI Health Overview In 2023, EJI opened a health clinic in Montgomery to provide free health care to people who are formerly incarcerated and other vulnerable populations in Alabama. EJI believes that access to high-quality health care is essential for reducing poverty and is a basic human right. In addition to our brick‑and‑mortar clinical space located in Montgomery, we operate a mobile health unit that provides outreach to locations across Alabama. Primary Responsibilities Provide transitional primary care, including diagnosis and treatment of common chronic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, kidney disease, depression, anxiety, and post‑traumatic stress disorder. Create a safe and dignified space for patients who have traditionally lacked access to care, have significant mistrust of medical providers, and may have suffered medical neglect while incarcerated. Conduct comprehensive health screenings and clinical assessments across various community settings aboard a mobile health unit. Perform screening and initial evaluation of infectious diseases, such as HIV and hepatitis C. Preference for candidates who are willing to prescribe direct‑acting antiviral treatment for hepatitis C after undergoing training and with support from clinicians with experience. Conduct substance use screening and evaluation. Preference for candidates who are willing to prescribe medication‑assisted treatment where appropriate. Provide counseling on medication management and work with an interdisciplinary team to address patient social needs where possible. Collaborate with an interdisciplinary team to creatively address structural determinants of health through mobile outreach, home visits, and social support. EJI Health’s interdisciplinary team includes other providers, registered nurses, administrative staff, and social work and legal support from EJI. Qualifications Medical Degree (Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy) from an accredited university (U.S. accredited or equivalent) Completion of an accredited residency program in Internal Medicine or Family Medicine Board Certified/Eligible in Internal Medicine or Family Medicine Ability to obtain licensure to practice medicine in Alabama Ability to obtain Alabama Controlled Substances Certificate (ACSC) and Alabama DEA registration Experience working in rural, underserved, and/or resource‑limited settings preferred Excellent communication, bedside manner, and organizational skills Position Logistics This is a full‑time, clinical position, located in Montgomery, Alabama. The typical patient schedule is Monday through Thursday from 8:30am to 5:30pm. Mobile unit trips may occur weekly. Fridays reserved for patient follow‑ups, case review, meetings, and administrative priorities. Position includes medical professional liability/malpractice insurance coverage.
