Job Description Summary

This position provides operational and technical support for the Veterinary Technician program and is essential to maintaining a safe and effective learning environment. Responsibilities include classroom and laboratory setup, equipment maintenance and repair, inventory control, animal care coordination, compliance documentation, and support of lab and clinical activities. The position supports instructional staff in delivering hands-on technical training, allowing faculty to devote more time to teaching, mentoring, and student development. The role also assists with program operations, special events, and college promotion activities, contributing to an enhanced student learning experience and the long-term success of the program. This position also assists in programming and college promotion through attendance at industry events.

Job Description

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

The following duties are primarily performed and are essential for this position. Employees are expected to be able to perform each of these job duties satisfactorily to be qualified for the position. Other duties may be required and assigned.

• Manage and maintain Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) and animal use documentation and logging.
• Monitor student care shifts and verify that all assigned tasks are completed according to animal welfare standards.
• Oversee the accuracy and completeness of student medical records to ensure compliance with all legal and professional standards.
• Coordinate animal intake, discharge, and transportation while maintaining appropriate records.
• Drive college vehicles to transport equipment or accompany students and staff on class-related field trips. Ensure vehicle readiness and compliance with safety regulations.
• Obtain, maintain, and stock all program supplies and consumables.
• Maintain up-to-date inventory records for all program materials.
• Input students into Salt House Essential Skills documentation site and maintain accurate logging of skill completion.
• Maintain and troubleshoot laboratory diagnostic equipment, including chemistry analyzers, CBC machines, microscopes, and other essential laboratory instruments.
• Oversee the care, maintenance, and troubleshooting of program equipment such as the radiology unit, anesthesia monitoring devices, dental machines, and instructional models.
• Coordinate service calls and repairs as needed, maintaining service logs and warranty information.
• Ensure all equipment remains in safe, functional condition and ready for instructional use.
• Track and enter patient charges related to animal care and student procedures.
• Support program record management and data collection for accreditation or compliance reporting.
• Participate in student recruitment efforts, including high school visits, promotional events, and contests. Assist in showcasing program strengths and career opportunities.

Non-Essential Functions and Responsibilities

• Assist with organizing and setting up internal events, such as open houses, advisory committee meetings, or student showcases.
• Contribute to promotional efforts by providing photos, equipment descriptions, or success stories for newsletters, social media, or program brochures.
• Attend optional workshops, training sessions, or conferences to stay informed about industry trends and instructional technologies.
• Provide informal mentorship or technical support to new staff, student workers, or interns working within the program.
• Support minor improvements to the lab or shop environment, such as organizing displays, updating signage, or enhancing visual appeal.
• Assist in gathering data or photos for grant applications, program reviews, or accreditation documentation when requested.
• Participate in community service projects or outreach events that align with the college’s mission, such as equipment demonstrations at local fairs or expos.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and/or Experience Requirements:

• Associate's degree in related field required.
• One to two years in the Veterinary field is preferred.
• Technical proficiency with veterinary laboratory and clinical equipment.
• Excellent organizational and communication skills, with attention to detail and accuracy.

Licenses, Certifications, and Other Requirements:

• Requires valid Driver’s License.
• Subject to FVTC’s Motor Vehicle Records Disclosure Check.
• Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT) preferred.

Work Environment

• This position requires on-site, in-person work at the Fox Valley Technical College Veterinary Technician Program site in Appleton, WI.
• Work is performed in a variety of settings, including indoor and outdoor environments .
• The role involves frequent physical activity , including lifting, bending, standing for extended periods, and operating or repairing heavy equipment.
• This position is primarily based in a veterinary teaching and laboratory setting and requires regular interaction with students, faculty, staff, and animals.
• Responsibilities require frequent movement between instructional labs, animal care areas, storage locations, and office spaces.
• Employees may be exposed to animal-related allergens, odors, bodily fluids, disinfectants, cleaning agents, and other materials commonly found in veterinary educational settings.
• Flexibility in schedule may be required to support special events, field trips, or industry engagements outside of standard hours.

Work environment may change based upon college needs.

Physical Requirements

• Mobility : While some administrative tasks may be desk-based, the role requires frequent movement across labs, classrooms, outdoor areas, and occasionally off-site locations. Occasional mobility is also needed for attending meetings, tours, or events within the workplace.

• Lifting and Carrying: Must be able to lift, carry, push, or pull moderate to heavy items (up to 25 lbs) regularly, including tools, equipment parts, and instructional materials.
• Fine Motor Skills: Requires precise hand movements and manual dexterity for operating tools, performing equipment repairs, and handling small components.
• Animal Handling : Ability to safely handle and restrain animals of varying sizes in accordance with established safety and animal welfare procedures.
• Repetitive Motions: Must be able to perform repetitive tasks such as typing, tool handling, or equipment adjustments without discomfort or injury.
• Communication: Strong verbal and written communication skills are essential for interacting with students, faculty, staff, and industry partners both in person and via electronic communication.
• Driving: A valid driver’s license is required. Must be able to safely operate college vehicles for transporting equipment or accompanying students on field trips.

Additional Information

Starting Range: $24.53 - $28.86 per hour.
Pay is based on a multitude of factors, including experience, qualifications, education, relevant certifications, internal equity, and market data.
