Position Summary An employee in this position performs general duty law enforcement work to protect life and property in Harnett County for the Office of the Sheriff. Responsibilities include patrolling the county during assigned shifts in a vehicle, preventing, detecting, and investigating disturbances and crime, enforcing gun carry laws, serving civil and criminal papers, responding to calls, apprehending suspects, and executing related assignments.Additional duties may involve assignment as Court Deputy/Bailiff, Civil Services Unit, School Resource Officer, or other special assignments. Annual Salary Deputy I: $53,006 Duties and Responsibilities Key duties include: Patrol the county in a vehicle; serve civil and criminal papers; respond to calls; examine premises of unoccupied residences or buildings; detect unusual conditions; maintain surveillance for stolen cars, missing persons, or suspects. Respond to calls for assistance, complaints, suspicious activity, domestic disputes, and disruptive behavior; determine true nature of situation; take legal or persuasive action warranted. Investigate possible crimes through observation, questioning witnesses, and gathering physical evidence; perform investigative tasks; make arrests; process criminal suspects; present findings in court. Serve warrants, apprehend, process, and transport criminal suspects to county magistrate and/or county detention facilities. Provide courtroom security for judges, the public, and inmates; coordinate seclusion and other procedures with juries; escort inmates to and from courtroom. Serve as School Resource Officer: establish rapport with students, faculty, and staff; provide security on campus; enforce traffic control; monitor athletic and social school events; counsel regarding substance abuse, gang avoidance, drug resistance, DWI, and other laws; present programming in classrooms; investigate criminal activities on campus. Serve a variety of civil and criminal papers, court orders, summons, etc. Operate a two‑way radio to receive instructions and report information to headquarters; maintain vehicle, weapons, and equipment in working order. Conduct background checks. Prepare detailed records and reports of activities using prescribed methods. Assist other law enforcement and emergency agencies in controlling emergency situations. Advise public on laws and local ordinances; serve papers. Assist stranded motorists; give information and directions to visitors and the general public. Work assigned shift; shift may include alternating weekends. Must be able to drive and operate a vehicle as required. Perform other related duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications High school diploma and completion of basic law enforcement training. No experience required; or equivalent education and/or experience. Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license (or obtain before assignment to sworn duties). Possession of Basic Law Enforcement Certification preferred; DCI certifications desired. Meet minimum requirements set by the North Carolina Sheriff’s Training and Standards Commission for certified law enforcement officers and prospects of completing full certification within prescribed time frames. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of state and federal laws, local ordinances, and department policies, especially on search and seizure, serving papers, pursuit, and arrest. Knowledge of law enforcement principles, practices, and equipment. Knowledge of scientific crime detection and criminal identification methods and procedures. Skill in using firearms and other equipment and in applying self‑defense tactics. Skill in collaborating with others; resolving conflicts; using tact and firmness with the public. Ability to act with sound judgment in routine and emergency situations. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. Ability to present effective court testimony. Ability to prepare clear and concise activity reports. Ability to build and maintain cooperative public relations with citizens. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, and public officials. Ability to remain calm under challenging or volatile circumstances. Physical Demands Must be able to perform light work frequently exerting up to 30 pounds of force to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects. Occasionally may require up to 50 pounds of force. Work also involves balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, grasping, handling, observing sounds, distinguishing among sounds, kneeling, lifting, manual dexterity, mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, stooping, expressing ideas verbally, shouting above ambient noise, and walking. Must possess visual acuity for analyzing data, working with color or depth perception, and distinguishing details. Must operate motor vehicles, use a computer, and inspect for defects. Work Environment Work subject to hazards associated with law enforcement, including indoor and outdoor environments, extreme hot and cold weather, exposure to hazardous persons, loud noises, hazardous spills, fumes, oils, gases, flammable liquids, and compliance with OSHA bloodborne pathogen standards.
