A Class Structural Welder - SDCA

Responsibilities Work in compliance with all safety, quality, environmental, and health requirements. Weld a variety of aluminum and/or steel configurations, including single‑pass and multi‑pass fillets in all positions for all joint and material thickness configurations. Perform multi‑pass full‑penetration joint details for all joint and material thickness configurations. Mount, install, and inspect welds to ensure they meet Austal USA standards and project specifications. Assist, train, or mentor less‑skilled welders, fitters, apprentices, and trades assistants as assigned. Work with a sense of urgency, efficiency, and productive output to meet production deadlines. Maintain safe work practices and adhere to safety policies and procedures. Keep the worksite free of rubbish, organize materials and equipment in an orderly manner, and minimize waste of consumables and material. Be accountable for completing daily work assignments, obtaining required signatures, and ensuring quality. Assist or work with other trades or Austal USA employees as directed, including tasks outside the welding craft when required. Monitor the working environment for compliance with quality, safety, environmental, and health regulations and report deficiencies to the supervisor. Maintain proper contract prep, including paint removal for any weld, and ensure preheat, inner‑pass temperatures, heat input, and other welding parameters stay within procedure limits. Perform routine preventive maintenance on welding equipment and maintain required PPE. Take direction, follow instructions, and work independently or as part of a team to achieve consistent, high‑quality welds. Wear required safety equipment and comply with Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) standards at all times. Obtain and maintain a required security clearance. Qualifications / Knowledge / Experience Minimum of 1year as a B‑Class welder at Austal producing advanced fillet welds or 2years of GMAW MIG aluminum welding and/or 2years of FCAW/GMAW steel welding at a comparable employer. Completion of an Austal USA approved additional or accelerated Structural Welding training course may also count toward required experience. Ability to pass A‑Class skills evaluation tests to demonstrate welding ability for full‑penetration joint details, arc gouging, and back gouging of steel welds via mechanical, flame, and ARC gouging processes. Ability to successfully complete onboarding procedures and meet AL CV or A‑Class welding qualification test requirements for the vessel. High level of pride in workmanship and ability to weld in uncomfortable positions when required. Demonstrated ability to weld fillets for material thicknesses 4mm–25mm and to manage various weld shapes such as gusset toe, wraps, terminations, T‑Bar wraps, corners, and vertical intersections. Consistent ability to weld continuously for 400mm and to back‑step and sequence welds based on provided information and industry best practices. Ability to monitor and adjust heat input, preheat, and heat distortion to stay within procedure parameters. Good mechanical aptitude, reliable basic weld pick‑up inspection skills, and minimal supervision for corrective work. Excellent hand‑eye coordination, spatial orientation, listening, verbal communication, and problem‑solving skills. Proficiency in interpreting construction drawings, job specifications, instruction manuals, manufacturer handbooks, change orders, and contract specifications to obtain welding sizing and edge preparation requirements. Willingness and ability to perform routine preventive maintenance on welding equipment. Willingness to work any shift or overtime as required and a flexible schedule. Basic literacy in English sufficient for reading, writing, and communication. Employment Eligibility & Additional Guidelines Must be 18years of age or older at the time of application. Physical Demands Regular standing, walking, hand manipulation, reaching, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and occasional sitting. Ability to bend, squat, stoop, crawl, and kneel repeatedly. Prolonged standing and frequent lifting or pushing/pulling of 20lbs, occasional lifting or pushing/pulling of 50–75lbs. Climbing and working safely on stairs, scaffolding, ladders, and ramps; operating at heights above 12ft. Working at various levels (waist, eye, overhead) and in confined spaces up to 18”×36” openings. Ability to use personal protective equipment such as hard hat, safety glasses, steel‑toe shoes, goggles, respirator, harness, and flotation gear. Ability to withstand cold and hot temperatures and to respond to verbal and audible commands. Tools & Equipment Milling discs, saws, sanders, grinders, burr motors, band saws, skill saws, cutting torches, arc gougers, plate magnets, general fitting aids, weld machines, and applicable components. Work Environment Humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, high precarious places, outside weather, and extreme heat.
