Gross Weekly Pay - $2,600 A Cardiac Cath Lab Nurse is a specialized Registered Nurse (RN) who cares for patients undergoing minimally invasive heart procedures to diagnose and treat cardiovascular disease. Working in a fast-paced catheterization laboratory, they act as a vital bridge between the patient and the interventional cardiologist.
Unlike traditional floor nursing, cath lab nurses focus heavily on one patient at a time throughout the three distinct phases of a procedural care cycle.

Cath lab nurses work on a wide variety of cases, ranging from scheduled diagnostics to hyper-acute emergencies:

Core Phases of Care
- Before the Procedure (Pre-Op):
- They prepare the patient by reviewing medical history, lab results, and obtaining informed consent.
- They physically prep the insertion site (usually the groin or wrist), start IV lines, and administer pre-procedure medications.
- They provide heavy emotional support and patient education to calm anxiety.
- During the Procedure (Intra-Op):
- Circulating: The nurse manages the room, handles the sterile equipment, administers sedatives or emergency medications, and meticulously tracks patient vitals, oxygen levels, and cardiac rhythms.
- Scrubbing: In many labs, nurses are trained to "scrub in" alongside the physician to physically assist with the deployment of catheters, balloons, and stents.
- Monitoring: They read and document complex real-time hemodynamic data and intracardiac pressures.
- After the Procedure (Post-Op & Recovery):
- They closely monitor the access site for bleeding or hematomas, pull arterial/venous sheaths, and ensure the patient is hemodynamically stable.
- They educate the patient and family regarding surgical site care, lifestyle adjustments, new medications, and discharge instructions.
Cath lab nurses work on a wide variety of cases, ranging from scheduled diagnostics to hyper-acute emergencies:
- Diagnostic Angiograms: Imaging used to find blockages in the coronary arteries.
- Angioplasty & Stent Placement: Opening blocked heart arteries using small balloons and wire mesh tubes.
- Pacemaker & ICD Implants: Placing devices that regulate dangerous heart rhythms.
- Emergency STEMI Interventions: Rapid, life-saving procedures for patients actively having a major heart attack.
- High Autonomy & Quick Thinking: The environment is dynamic. Nurses must anticipate the physician's next move and react instantly to sudden, life-threatening cardiac rhythm changes.
- On-Call Requirements: Because heart attacks happen at any hour, cath lab nurses are required to rotate evening, weekend, and holiday "on-call" shifts to cover emergencies.
- Physical Demands: Nurses must wear heavy lead aprons during procedures to protect themselves from continuous fluoroscopic X-ray radiation.
