Senior Medical Director, US Rare Hematology

Title: Senior Medical Director, US Medical Affairs Rare Hematology Location: Boston, MA Reports To: Executive Director, Rare Hematology & Rare Nephrology, US Medical Affairs This is what you will do: The Sr. Medical Director will lead the strategic planning, tactical execution and leadership of Rare Hematology on the US Medical team. Responsible for providing strong scientific and medical perspective with an in-depth understanding of the PNH and AL amyloidosis as well as associated Rare Hematology medical landscapes. The Sr. Medical Director will contribute to the development and implementation of the short and long-term strategy for commercialized and pipeline assets in the Rare Hematology franchise, aligning with overall Alexion organizational strategy and ensuring effective and meaningful cross-functional collaboration on the US level as well as providing a strong voice for the US perspective within the global medical TA. Evolve the Alexion Global Medical Affairs mission to maximize patient outcomes by setting and continuously advancing the evidence-based medical standard of care as it relates to US data generation needs while contributing to global medical data generation efforts. The Sr. Medical Director reports into the US Rare Hematology & Nephrology Therapeutic Area Medical Lead, is a member of the US Medical Affairs - TA's Extended Leadership Team, and works cross-functionally in close collaboration with a number of Alexion Teams, namely on the US and Global level, e.g. US field medical team for the TA, US Medical Excellence, HEOR, Global Medical Communications, Medical Operations, Clinical Development, Patient Experience & Insights, US Commercial, Pharmacovigilance, Epidemiology, Clinical Operations, and Regulatory Affairs as well as Legal and Compliance business partners. - Developing and implementing US strategy and plan for US MA activities for disease areas and therapeutics in Rare Hematology franchise by providing medical leadership, insight and strategy to the evolving US PNH and AL amyloidosis medical team across various internal functions.
- Providing oversight, mentorship and guidance to other current and/or future US Medical Directors or Associate Medical Directors
- Leading the situational assessment of the patient journey and the US product strategy development including harmonization of activities involving KOLs building from, and aligned with global medical affairs Rare Hematology & Nephrology teams and personnel
- Developing in-year and future medical strategy and tactical plan for the US Medical Affairs team working closely with the TA Lead, including key contributions to field focus
- Represent USMA Rare Hematology & Nephrology leadership at relevant congresses in US
- Development, implementation and management of budget plan for US Rare Hematology Medical Team initiatives.
- Providing strategic medical recommendations for in-line life cycle management (LCM) and potential pipeline assets
- Leading and collaborating on evidence generation projects
- Contributing with scientific and medical acumen to registration programs working closely with GMA
- Providing medical review and ensuring alignment with Rare Hematology strategy of Investigator sponsored research (ISR) proposals at proper consideration times in lifecycle
- Providing clear strategic guidance about scientific communication, internal medical training, external medical education (CME, Symposia, medical education), Medical information.
- Contributing medical perspective to commercial strategy as appropriate
- Support TA lead with team's performance in terms of goals and delivery of US medical plans
- Serving as the medical expert and resource within ALXN US in support of the therapeutic area.
- Leading content development and presentation for external medical education programs and other medical initiatives as appropriate
- Developing, conducting, or contributing to therapeutic training programs for Alexion personnel in conjunction with GMA training and Med Comm Leads
- Establishing strategic partnerships with KOLs in areas of scientific interest and serving as conduit for flow of information both to the medical community and into the company, working closely with the field medical team
- Working closely with the Field Medical Team Directors in the development and execution of US KOL medical engagement strategy
- Establishing and/or enhancing partnerships with key academic institutions and developing relationships with key thought leaders
- Planning, designing and managing medical Advisory Boards
- Gathering and analyzing insights from medical Advisory Boards, conferences, field and other sources to inform evolution of medical plans
- Other key items and projects as defined by Rare Hematology & Nephrology US Medical Lead
- Must have an MD, PhD or PharmD level degree or equivalent
- At least 10 years' experience in Medical Affairs or other relevant industry functions
- Launch preparation and execution experience
- Proficiency in Medical Governance, with solid knowledge of the regulatory and compliance regulations
- Excellent communication skills both written and verbal.
- Strong leadership skills and ability to thrive in highly matrixed environment
- Team player with ability to influence without authority and role model leadership qualities
- Excellent interpersonal skills with proven track record and ability to drive results as an effective team member and project leader
- Proven ability to manage budget and resources
- Strong scientific, clinical and business acumen

- Travel required up to 30% (mainly domestic)
- The duties of this role are generally conducted in an office environment. As is typical of an office-based role, employees must be able, with or without an accommodation to: use a computer; engage in communications via phone, video, and electronic messaging; engage in problem solving and non-linear thought, analysis, and dialogue; collaborate with others; maintain general availability during standard business hours.
- Position is Boston HQ based, with expectations of HQ attendance at least 3 days per week
- All activities should be conducted per Alexion, AstraZeneca Rare Disease policies.
