Surgical Technologist

Location: CHA Cambridge Hospital Work Schedule: Day / Evening (Monday–Friday 7:30 AM–4:30 PM, 8‑hour shifts, 40 hrs/week; weekend, on‑call duties required) Summary Assist the surgical provider and circulating nurse through preparation and assistance with surgical procedures. Surgical technologists prepare equipment, maintain the sterile environment, and complete related tasks as required. Responsibilities Consult with caregivers to obtain clinical information as indicated. Serve as a professional resource to colleagues in an open, friendly manner. Answer phone professionally and comply with patient call standards. Act as a team member, participating in follow‑through of work that needs completion. Collaborate with unit colleagues to develop, implement, and evaluate clinical standards. Handle emergency situations promptly, precisely, and professionally. Maintain surgical sterile conscience and report breaches to the registered nurse. Understand current OSHA standards and guidelines for personal protective equipment. Adhere to position descriptions, policies, protocols, CHA Service Standards, regulatory agencies, and procedures related to professional practice. Provide culturally and ethnically sensitive care to all patients. Participate in all checklists and unit‑specific QA/QI program. Understand emergency codes and assist provider with endoscopy procedures. Set up procedure rooms with appropriate equipment and supplies. Enter procedural data into the system (Provation). Adhere to reprocessing standards for endoscopes and assist with terminal sterilization. Stock rooms and perform unit‑specific quality testing. Scrub, gown, and glove appropriately; set up sterile tables with instruments, supplies, medication, and solutions; label medications/solutions on the sterile field. Perform appropriate counts with circulator prior to incision and closure. Help in draping the sterile field and pass instruments through a neutral zone to the surgeon. Maintain highest standard of sterile technique during procedure. Prepare sterile dressings and clean instruments for terminal sterilization per policies and procedures. Assist other team members with terminal room cleaning and ensure timely room readiness. Prepare operating room with special equipment and supplies per surgeon preferences; anticipate needs and request additional supplies appropriately. Collect and label specimens per policies and procedures. Organize daily work and prioritize tasks. Perform other related duties as assigned or directed. Minimum Qualifications High School Diploma or equivalent. Graduate of an accredited surgical technologist program for new hires. Successful completion of Periop 101 during CHA orientation. Minimum 2 years of current surgical technologist experience. Certification: holds a certified surgical technologist credential administered by a nationally recognized certifying body accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies and recognized by the American College of Surgeons or the Association of Surgical Technologists. If not yet certified at hire, must obtain within 12 months of graduation. Valid TDEA (temporary or permanent) certification is required.
