DOC Wildland Fire Fighting Supervisor CSTS I (Canon City)

Position Overview Wild Land Fire Fighting Supervisor (SWIFT) – Correctional Support Trades Supervisor I (CSTS I) located in Canon City, Colorado. This role may also serve as a float for other Correctional Industries departments, including Farm, Leather Products, Metal Fabrication, TAG/TAB/Sign, and Heavy Equipment. The position requires flexibility in scheduling and may include day/night shifts. Responsibilities Develop and provide forestry management training to inmates. Review and revise program curriculum, materials, and learning assignments. Assess demand and training requirements of cooperating agencies. Build and maintain a network of cooperating agencies for wildfire or disaster relief opportunities. Manage offenders during deployment on wildfire or forestry projects. Apply facility policy and procedures to ensure safety and security. Handle offender movement and accountability. Manage program operating budget and maintain equipment and material inventories. Provide supervision, training, scheduling, and evaluations for offender workers. Record attendance and compile payroll information. Maintain a database of offender training records. Ensure the safety and security of the public, facility staff, and offenders. Conduct custody, surveillance, supervisory, transport, shakedown, and count duties. Minimum Qualifications Four (4) years of work experience in wildland fire fighting. Experience must be described in detail on the application; part‑time experience will be prorated. Special Qualifications Must hold Single Resource level (Crew Boss) credentials capable of leading a Type 2 Hand Crew. Substitutions Four years of college or university education in fire science or a closely related field will substitute for the required experience, on a year‑for‑year basis. Transcripts must be provided. NWCG Certified FC2, Single Resource, or Crew Boss certificates provide three (3) years of experience substitution. A copy of the certification must be submitted. Required Competencies Motivate others to work cohesively to accomplish tasks. Maintain industrial tools and equipment. Effectively work with offenders through daily instruction. Respond to emergency situations such as fights, fires, and escapes. Possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Exhibit exceptional discernment and decision‑making skills. Read and comprehend written English. Communicate fluently in English, verbally and in writing. Maintain self‑control and remain calm in stressful or potentially violent situations. Stay alert, emotionally stable, and resilient under pressure. Show tolerance to stress, confinement, and high‑stakes interaction. Create accessible documents and technical content following plain language guidelines. Preferred Qualifications Experience working in a correctional environment involving wildland fire fighting. Experience supervising or training others in wildland firefighting, forest management, or related fields. Possess Crew Boss Certification by the National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG).
