Position Overview 

The Accounting Associate is a key member of the Council's accounting and finance team and is responsible for accounts payable, reconciliations, and related accounting support. The position plays an important role in maintaining accurate financial records, ensuring timely payments and supporting effective financial controls throughout the Council. 

Success in this role requires strong attention to detail, organization, follow-through, and the ability to work effectively with Council employees, volunteers, vendors and other stakeholders. This position reports to the Vice President of Finance.  

Primary Responsibilities 

The Accounting Associate supports timely and accurate accounting, payment processing, and financial reporting. Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to: 

• Enter and code accounts payable invoices into the accounting system, verify appropriate supporting documentation and approvals, and coordinate timely payments to vendors. 
• Review and process employee expense reports, ensuring appropriate documentation and approvals.  
• Reconcile Council credit card transactions with purchase orders and receipts and ensure timely credit card payments.  
• Prepare daily reconciliation files of receipts and payments for the Vice President of Finance’s review and posting.  
• Prepare weekly check runs for review and signatures by the Council CEO and an authorized Board member.  
• Respond accurately and promptly to payment-related requests from vendors, Council employees and volunteers. 
• Assist the Vice President of Finance with month-end close activities, account reconciliations, audit support and other accounting projects as needed. 

Education, Experience and Qualifications  

• Associate’s degree in accounting, business, or related field preferred. 
• Two to three years of experience in bookkeeping or accounting.  
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy. 
• Strong organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines. 
• Ability to maintain appropriate confidentiality when handling financial and employee information. 
• Ability to identify discrepancies, research issues and follow through to resolution. 
• Experience with nonprofit accounting is preferred. 
• Currently located in or willing to relocate to Central Virginia. 
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel and Outlook, and experience with enterprise accounting systems and financial reporting software.  
• Commitment to Scouting America’s mission and vision and willingness to subscribe to its principles and standards. 
• All persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and to complete the required employment eligibility verification form upon hire. HOVC will not sponsor work visas. 
• Successful completion of a criminal background check is required.
