Manager of Surveying and EngineeringPosition Overview

We are seeking an experienced Manager of Surveying and Engineering to provide senior-level leadership and technical oversight for a combined surveying and civil engineering team. This position will be responsible for establishing consistent standards, improving field-to-office coordination, resolving technical challenges, and ensuring quality, safety, and regulatory compliance across projects.

The ideal candidate brings extensive experience in surveying and/or site/civil engineering, strong knowledge of local land development regulations, and the leadership skills necessary to develop teams, strengthen customer relationships, and improve departmental performance.

• Establish and maintain department workflows, standards, documentation, and operational controls.

• Provide senior-level technical guidance and diagnose and resolve complex surveying and civil engineering issues.

• Lead and develop surveying and engineering personnel, promoting accountability, collaboration, safety, and professional growth.

• Coordinate effectively between field crews, office staff, project teams, customers, and internal leadership.

• Review plans, field notes, project documentation, and technical deliverables for accuracy, quality, and compliance.

• Support project execution, customer service, scheduling, resource allocation, and departmental operational goals.

• Monitor department performance, productivity, quality, and financial objectives.

• Visit jobsites as needed to verify field conditions, resolve issues, and ensure project assumptions and designs are properly aligned with site conditions.

• Develop and improve processes that enhance efficiency, communication, quality, and consistency.

• Coach and mentor emerging leaders and technical staff.

• Collaborate with senior leadership on department strategy, business development, professional development, and growth of the engineering customer base.

• Maintain a strong commitment to safety, professional ethics, regulatory compliance, and quality standards.

• Active Professional Surveyor (PS) license, Professional Engineer (PE - Civil) license, or both.

• 10+ years of professional experience in surveying, site development, civil engineering, or a related field.

• Strong knowledge of local land development codes, regulations, permitting requirements, and applicable standards.

• Proficiency with surveying, civil engineering, and construction technology, including tools such as:

  • AutoCAD

  • Trimble Earthworks / Siteworks

  • GPS and UTS equipment

  • Machine control technology

• Strong understanding of field surveying and office-based engineering/design workflows.

• Proven ability to coordinate field and office operations effectively.

• Strong analytical, problem-solving, organizational, and decision-making skills.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

• Demonstrated leadership and team-development capabilities.

• Valid driver's license and willingness to travel to jobsites as required.

The successful candidate will serve as a key leader within the surveying and engineering function. This role requires someone who can balance technical expertise, operational leadership, customer service, and team development .

The Manager will be expected to:

The day typically begins by reviewing active surveying and engineering priorities, identifying project needs, and coordinating deliverables between field crews and office personnel.

The Manager will divide their time between reviewing plans, field notes, technical documentation, and departmental standards, as well as visiting jobsites when necessary to verify conditions, resolve challenges, and keep projects moving efficiently.

The role also involves frequent interaction with internal leadership, customers, project teams, and field personnel. Time will be dedicated to improving processes, mentoring employees, monitoring performance, and ensuring the department operates safely, efficiently, and consistently.
